NCREE to set up new seismology research center at NCKU

Tainan, Taiwan, January 7, 2015

The National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) will construct its second research center in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, for the research and development of earthquake resistant technologies, revealed the university.

The center will be constructed at a cost of NT$1.3 billion (US$46.65 million) and is expected to be completed by 2017.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at NCKU’s Gueriren campus on January 6. Vice Premier Simon Chang chaired the ceremony and said the research at the center will focus on near-fault earthquakes which put an estimated 2.5 million buildings and 8.6 million people nationwide at risk.

However, currently the NCREE does not possess the technology to approximate the effects such seismic activity has on buildings, he said.

According to Chang, the new facility will feature a more intricate earthquake shaking table than its Taipei counterpart to assess buildings’ seismic performance in simulations to safeguard public safety during earthquakes.

NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung indicated that besides NT$100 million in subsidy, the university will also have five full-time professors, including three specializing in civil engineering structures, one in hydraulic structures and one in static structure help the center make contribution to disaster prevention in Taiwan.

The equipment at the center will include a vibration machine that could simulate the earth movements up to two meters from the hypocenter of a near-fault earthquake, according to NCKU, which will run the facility jointly with National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL).

NARL's Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering has a seismic simulator but its range is only 15 centimeters.

When the new center is completed, researchers will be able to develop better technologies for building structures that can withstand powerful earthquakes, NARL said.
