NCKU students shine in competition of Future City Workshop

The “Future City Workshop” was held for the first time at the Taiwan Air Force (TAF) Innovation Base, Taipei, Taiwan, from June 2 to June 6, attracting over 200 students from all across the country. Students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) shine in the competition and took home with big prizes.

According to NCKU, Not only did one of the student teams from the university win the “best sharing award”(傑出互動獎), another seven teams also garnered the “innovative finalists award” (創新入圍獎).

The “Future City Workshop” is a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education. The participants are divided into 41 groups, of which 2 will be awarded the “best sharing award,” and 15 are given the “innovative finalists award.”

The finalists will hold an exhibition of achievements in October, where a winner will be chosen, and awarded a short-term training opportunity at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab.

One of the teams that won the best sharing award was composed of three NCKU Department of Urban Planning graduate students and 3 students from National Taiwan University.

The group won the award with their work “Serendipity” which is a simulation system software that mainly explores entrepreneurship suitability in Taipei, as well as the tripartite interaction between entrepreneurs, investors, and the government.

According to NCKU student Jia-Ling Zhong, the software considers the variables that arise under different circumstances and, through logical tradeoff, calculates the probability of success of an endeavor. Factors such as funds, location of the company, surrounding facilities, transport, and assistance from public sectors can all be keyed into the system.

Originally, the team wanted to design a software that could assist with finding parking space in the city, another student of NCKU Yen-Yo Chen points out.

However, after discussion with people from MIT Media Lab, they changed course and decided to construct an entrepreneurial dynamic simulation program.

MIT is renowned for its science and technology, Chen adds, and they both encourage creativity and demand implementation; the ability of make an “original product” is key to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Interestingly, the MIT Media Lab staff adopts an entrepreneurial viewpoint when giving guidance to participants, making people feel clearly, the importance and necessity of thinking outside the box.

According to the team, the greatest lesson learned is how to use the minimal amount of time to get to the main point. In the past, student presentations in school averages fifteen minutes in length; however, during the competition, one needs to deliver the focal point within two minutes, in order to attract the attention of the assessors.
