NCKU launches fitness tracking smart watch to promote mobile healthcare on campus

Tainan, Taiwan, April 18, 2016

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has been promoting healthy lifestyle choices on campus and now the promotion has been lifted to another level with the latest technology. A newly innovated smart watch named iNCKU made its debut at a press conference on April 18.

The wearable gadgets will track steps, calories, distance and monitors sleep and heart rate, according to NCKU Health Center, and its features include body fat measurement and a hydration monitoring.

NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su said, NCKU has successfully developed a new health management system. With the combination of the smart watch and cloud platform, we’re able to track health indicators and receive immediate feedback.

Tainan Deputy Mayor Chun-Tso Yen said, “About 30 to 40 percent Taiwanese are suffering from obesity. Most of them are resulted from the unhealthy lifestyle since adolescence.”

The health management system is a co-innovation effort from NCKU Office of Student Affairs, NCKU Health Center and Innovative Digital Content Research Center.

A total of 450 students at NCKU whose body mass index from 24 to 34 are invited to join the initial campaign.

Wearing the smart watch, students are able to use the technology to monitor their health conditions such as walking step, calories burned, activities, sleep duration and quality of sleep.

Meanwhile, NCKU Health Center will provide health advice and guidance according to the data students provide.
