Prof. Wu and Prof Huang, winners of the Honorary Scholar were granted with 300 thousand NTD, approximately 9 thousand USD, respectively. Associate Professors Cheng-Chien Liu (劉正千) and Kuo-Feng Ssu (斯國峰), winners of the K.T. Li Research Award, respectively, received 120 thousand NTD, approximately 3.6 thousand USD. Gold Medal Awards went to Prof. Jyh-Ming Ting (丁志明), Prof. Te-Ho Lee (李德河) and Prof. Yu-Chung Chang (張玉川).

The awards were presented in the convocation ceremony, held in the headquarter of Delta Electronics in Taipei and hosted by President Bruce C.H. Cheng of Delta Electronics and Academician Michael M.C. Lai, the President of NCKU.

Dr. Cheng, the president of Delta Electronics attributed the achievement of his company to the profitable economical environment founded by K.T. Li, a late Senior Advisor in Presidential Office, Taiwan. Mr. K.T. Li was widely regarded as the key figure in the Taiwan economic “miracle.” That is the reason he made donation to establish K.T. Li Technology Lectureship in order to honor outstanding researchers and scholars, and to promote technology education and research.

Academician King-Ning Tu (杜經寧) obtained his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. He had served as an Senior Manager of Materials Science Department at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center before he was appointed as Professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering of University of California at Los Angeles. He has been elected as a Fellow of Science Research Council Senior Research, the Royal Society Guest Research at Cavendish Laboratory in UK, American Physical Society, Metallurgical Society and Overseas Fellow of Churchill College. He was the recipient of Application to Practice Award of the Metallurgical Society and Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for senior US scientists. He was named as the President of the Materials Research Society in 1981 and elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He has published more than 300 academic articles, which have been highly cited more than 10 thousand times. For example, 18 articles of his have been cited more than one hundred times. His remarkable researches on lead-free solder metallurgy have made profound influence in related industry.

Professor Joy-Lay Huang (黃肇瑞) earned his Ph.D in material science from University of Utah at Salt Lake City. His research mainly focuses on ceramic materials, composite materials, electronic materials and surface modification and coatings .He has made a great deal of contribution on education and research development. He has been awarded with Outstanding Research Award from the National Science Council in 1999 and in 2000 as well as 3 consecutive years since 2004. He was also the recipient of Outstanding Industrial Articles Awards from Ministry of Education.

Professor Hua-Lin Wu (吳華林), the Distinguished Professor of College of Medicine in NCKU, gained his Ph.D in bio-chemistry from Ohio State University. His research interests focuses on biological functions of thrombomodulin (TM) and angiostatin. He also has many innovative discoveries and theories related on plasminogen and streptokinase. He has gained renowned reputation globally. His discovery on new function of thrombomodulin has been conferred with various patents and has imparted technology transfer to industry. He was the recipient of Technology Transfer Contribution Awards from National Science Council in 2006. His contribution to bio-technology education is remarkable.

Associate Professor Cheng-Chien Liu (劉正千) from Institute of Satellite Informatics and Earth Environment, Department of Earth Sciences at NCKU obtained his Ph.D in Environment Earth Sciences and Engineering from Imperial College, University of London in 2000. He received an NRC Research Associateship award and worked at NASA Stennis Space Center from 2001 to 2003.

Prof. Liu′s specialties lie in Ocean Optics and Remote Sensing, ranging from the fundamental theorem and numerical modeling of radiation transfer in the water body, the applications of ocean color satellite data, the auto-processing of FORMOSAT-2 imagery operated by Taiwan, and various applications on natural disasters and environment monitoring. His academic achievements were abundant in quantity and high in quality. Since his return to Taiwan and resumption of his work at NCKU in 2003, he has published 9 international scientific papers. Among them, three have been published in the journals of top 5%. One of his papers about retrieving the constituents of water bodies from remote sensing was published in Optics Express, which is considered as the best journal of the 55 journals of the related fields.

Associate Professor Kuo-Feng Ssu (斯國峰) obtained his Ph.D in computer science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research specialties focus on Mobile Computing and Wireless Networking, Dependable Systems and Networks and Parallel and Distributed Systems. His paper “Adaptive Checkpointing with Storage Management for Mobile Environments” was elected as the Best Paper in Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing in 1999. One of his projects granted from National Science Council, related to design of multimedia transmission, has been successfully developed into commercialization for use in hospital and granted with patents in Taiwan.
