CDC Director-General visits NCKU (news)

Tainan, Taiwan, September 10, 2015

Dr. Steve Kuo, Director-General of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC), recently visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, to acknowledge the helpful input of the university in combating dengue fever.

Kuo praised the university’s timely and thorough response to dengue outbreaks when he met NCKU President Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, a renowned environmental health expert, on September 9.

The result is very satisfactory, said Kuo who added that he had talked about the dengue outbreak with Tainan City Mayor Ching-Te Lai earlier in a meeting.

The input from the NCKU community has been very helpful when Tainan battles its worst dengue fever outbreak recently, according to Kuo.

NCKU has dealt with an outbreak of dengue fever on campus since early August and an on-going campaign against dengue to engage communities against dengue has proven effective.

President Su said, “Dengue is our top priority, and we are trying very hard with our concerted efforts to fight against dengue and eliminate dengue on campus.”

The combat measures the university had implemented include weekly campus-wide cleanup, use of insecticide spray, dissemination of information about dengue fever and preventive measures, on-going dengue prevention campaign in the community, and even health education among the staff members.

Also, samples of mosquito repellent patches were given to the students and staff and dormitories were stocked with repellants for public use.
