2013 International Summer School (2013 ISS) organized by Taiwan Comprehensive University System (TCUS) kicked off at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, recently, with 38 students from 7 countries including Germany, U.S., Czech, U.K., China, Korea, and Taiwan.
The students at the opening ceremony, July 17, claimed that they are ready to set off their two-week visit in Taiwan and anticipating the comprehensive and fun program which is roughly divided into three sections, which are Chinese language and culture class, academic courses and field trip.
The academic courses designed by NCKU are professional courses taught by NCKU professors and guest speakers from internationally-renown institutes like University of Applied Science Karlsruhe, Germany.
“My professor at Karlsruhe recommended me to apply the program,” said Tobias Fischer from University of Applied Science Karlsruhe, who is first time to Taiwan, “and I’m here for the cultural experience and looking forward taking the course named Simulation Training in Operations Management in a Global and Virtual Environment.”
It is worth mentioning that NCKU opened a special course called Introduction to Chinese Medicine and Cross Culture Biomedical Ethics (ICMCBE) which is a draw for the students to apply the summer program.
Chris Cronin from University of Edinburgh, U.K, who is at the last year to get his medical degree said, “I chose to come to Taiwan and I’m doing this course just in the middle of my stay here to get some Chinese and also learning about Chinese Medicine as well.”
Mangala Patil who is an American student from Brown University School of Medicine showed interest in learning about alternative medicine and said, “I’ve been to other counties to learn about different types of alternative medicine, but I’ve never seen any eastern Asian traditional medicine so I decide to do this program.”
The ISS is held for the first time at the four campuses of TCUS with a view to recruit more international students to TCUS, to provide various and international learning environment for TCUS students, to invite overseas faculty to join TCUS ISS, to increase the motivations and experiences of TCUS faculty to teach in English and to integrate the teaching resources of TCUS.
The academic courses provided by ISS include Introduction to Transportation Infrastructure, Engineering and Technology Solution to Better Global Environment, Scientific Writing and Presenting, Simulation Training in Operations Management in a Global and Virtual Environment, Comprehensive Chinese Language Program, and Introduction to Chinese Medicine and Cross Culture Biomedical Ethics (ICMCBE).
TCUS had invited internationally-renown scholars to open courses for the participants of ISS who can choose two English-taught courses. Chinese language immersion courses are also provided by the Chinese Language Center to help the students to acquire Mandarin for communication needs.
Taiwan Comprehensive University System (TCUS) established in 2012 is an alliance formed by National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University, National Chung Hsing University, and National Chung Cheng University with world renowned superconductivity researcher Paul Ching-Wu Chu as honorary chancellor.
