2014 SATU Presidents’ Forum kicks off at NCKU

A total of 85 officials from 12 universities in Asia gathered in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, for a two-day forum, November 28-29, to discuss strategies for promoting online learning and exploring ICT in higher education.

The opening ceremony of 2014 Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents' Forum) was held at 1:20 pm November 28 at Conference Room 1 of International Conference Hall, NCKU.

NCKU President Hwung, in his capacity as chairman of Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents' Forum), gave his remarks, “SATU Presidents’ Forum now with over 137 member schools in 9 countries, was originally established in 2003 for the advancement of the quality of higher education in the region.”

“In the past 12 years, the SATU Presidents' Forum has been essential in our efforts of internalization , and we aspire to more intensive participation in international collaborations,” President Hwung said.

The theme of this year’s forum is Transforming Asian Higher Education in the 21st Century with a focus on MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses, according to President Hwung.

He noted, “NCKU has planned 12 MOOC courses and we offered our first MOOC course last semester, using ProEra platform. Now about 11 courses are being filmed.”

Dr. Lucia S. Lin, Political Deputy Minister from Ministry of Education, gave her congratulatory remarks at the opening ceremony, “To promote and coordinate the activities, during these years this forum has attributed its long-lasting endeavors.”

Lin also said, “This two-day forum will give us an opportunity to reevaluate the effort we have made, to celebrate our accomplishment, and to formulate plans for the ongoing work we can undertake together in the year ahead.”

NCKU Professor Dr. Cheng-Hung Huang who is also the Executive Secretary of SATU Presidents’ Forum International Secretariat said, “It is my great pleasure to be here to welcome you and also my great honor to take this opportunity to do the report regarding the history of SATU and also some of the activities organized by International Secretariat of SATU.”

After the opening ceremony, a keynote speech on JMOOC- MOOC from Japan, current status and perspective was given by Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai, President of JMOOC.
