National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, launched its first Campus Clean-Up Day today to stop the spread of dengue. The campaign for campus-wide cleanup was held every Wednesday starting from September 2.

The community members in the university were getting spruced up just before students start arriving for the fall semester.

People teamed up to clean up the environment, eliminate unnecessary container habitats that collect water, and use insecticides to kill mosquitoes.

On the morning of September 2, students, teachers and staff members helped each other cleaning up all over campus. NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su also joined the cleanup team.

President Su went to check around the environment of the Department of Life Sciences and the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering. She rolled up her sleeves to help kick off cleaning with the students and faculty members.

She said, the cleaning activities are not only active measures to prevent the spread of dengue fever but education to help making students conscious of the cleanliness of the surroundings.

After days of cleanup, campus environments had been substantially improved but there are still some danger hidden in the details, such as potted plants collecting water outside.

On her lead, Su had all members from the nine colleges of NCKU mobilize to clean up the environment and disseminate information on the prevention and control of dengue.

NCKU has taken serious efforts to keep the school and the rest of the community away from the possible threats of dengue.

Also, a training program to fight dengue will kick off on September 9 among the staff and faculty members.

The participants will learn the knowledge and measures against dengue fever on campus and play a part in preventing dengue from spreading.

NCKU had set up an emergency response team on August 25, partnering the community in the fight against dengue. Campus Clean-Up Day is scheduled to take place on every Wednesday beginning September 2.

A campus wide clean up is set for every Wednesday in NCKU after Tainan has reported more than 3,000 dengue fever cases since the start of this summer.
