Students at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, won nine scholarships from China Technical Consultants, Inc. Foundation (CTCI), the most of any schools this year.

Each of the nine students will be awarded NT$ 150,000 and a Certificate of Merit, the university revealed today.

The nine students, six are local and three international, gathered this morning to share the good news with NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su.

President Su congratulated the students and encouraged them to share their experience and feedback to pass on to their fellow students.

Phan Quoc Hung, a Vietnamese PhD student of mechanical engineering, said that he feels amazing to learn the news that he’s one of the recipients of CTCI Scholarship.

Hung’s research is developing a high accuracy Stokes-Mueller matrix polarimetry measurement system for characterizing the properties of biological material and its application in biological sensing.

“I tried to detect the blood glucose concentration with a very low concentration, approximately 20 dl,” he said.

Chia-Yi Lin, a senior undergraduate student from the Department of Environmental Engineering, said, “I was surprised because I thought my chance of being admitted is very low.”

Lin’s research is on developing green petrochemical technologies. She used environmental pollutants, through bio-refinery approach, and converted it into products with economic values.

“I worked alone on the research so it’s quite difficult for me to discuss the problems with others but I tried my best to seek advice from my lab members,” she said.

Lin, who is planning to study aboard next year, said that Stanford is her dream school and she may use the scholarship for admission fee or anything else that will help her pursue further education.

The award ceremony will be held this Saturday, December 19, at Convention Center in Taipei.

As a pioneer of new technologies, CTCI Foundation commits itself to developing technological talents for Taiwan. It has established a scholarship to praise and support excellent performance by students who are devoted to pursue higher education in engineering related university departments in Taiwan.
