Tainan, Taiwan, June 5, 2016
The 2016 National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Graduate Commencement Ceremony was held on June 6 honoring approximately 5,300 students, including undergraduate, master and doctoral students.
An-ting Liu, founder of Teach For Taiwan (TFT), Celine Yoda, ambassador of Burkina Faso, President of Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, Malaysia, and President of National Tainan Girls' Senior High School were invited to attend the ceremony.
NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su extended a warm welcome to all the guests, wishing the graduates well in their next adventures.
Pingdwende Loucmane Sawadogo from Burkina Faso delivered commencement speech said, “In my department we have over 42 professors and I talked to each of them and every time I talked to them I asked them ‘What did you learn from life?’ and then ‘If I’m your son what advice will you give me?’”
“The most important thing I learned from them is you learn a lot you may become a scholar but learning the principles of life you might become a man and that’s what the society need,” he added.
Sawadogo also noted, Professors here always talk about how can you give it back to the society. Because at the end of the day, nobody will remember how many money did you make but how many people’s life you have changed.
“Life is about people. Everything you are doing is about improving people’s life,” he said.
In her remarks, President Su said, “For students who have come to join NCKU from far land, I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for having entrusted us for the opportunity to facilitate your study away from home. It has been a privilege having you in this campus over the past years, and to become your alma mater after this day.”
She continued, “We hope we have been able to share with you the best we have and are hopeful that you will bring back even the better you are able to achieve in your life in the form that is meaningful to the betterment of the common world we share in the future.”
She said, “I know the journey is long! But, take all the blessings from NCKU and enjoy every moment of your endeavors, and do remember this will always be your home away from home.”
