NCKU Overseas Hubs have launched an interdisciplinary joint research program in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its core values to lead interdisciplinary experts around the world towards sustainable practices. Not only have the experiment results been published in international academic journals, but a series of webinars will be held from June to November. Experts and scholars in these countries will share their insights about regional and global issues and converse about the latest research developments, challenges, and future prospects.

The NCKU Joint Research Program includes doctoral leadership cultivation, which has garnered the active participation of international strategic partners. A total of 17 research teams have been formed, engaging 96 experts and scholars at home and abroad. In the form of virtual international research clusters, they are actively connecting ecological academic chains around the globe. NCKU is committed to building its strength in professional research and emphasizes the combined application of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. At the same time, NCKU keeps global sustainable development as its initial resolution in the face of future challenges shared by humankind.

NCKU Overseas Hubs launched international joint research program to cultivate talents for sustainable solutions.

NCKU’s science team has actively gathered the research power and energy in the participating countries so that they can jointly find innovative and improved solutions to major global issues such as textile dye degradation, the circular economy of waste-to-energy, hybrid renewable energy, the increased efficiency and stability of renewable energy, the conversion of biomass energy, energy storage technology, material applications of bioenergy, smart medication and precision medicine systems, smart diagnosis, dengue fever, COVID-19, mental health medicine, digital divides in the information society, and the development of new bonding materials, with emphasis on the scientific innovative value of science that gives back to human society.

NCKU values the cultivation of exceptional PhD talent. Through the Joint Research Program in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, NCKU aims to create an environment in which future leaders are cultivated and help PhD students gain practical experience via international industry-university research collaborations. During these research collaborations, NCKU PhD students taking part in the program can acquire the ability to perform experiments and learn how to strengthen experimental designs, optimize and utilize research instruments, manage projects, and improve their team communication skills. They will also attend regular international research discussions and meetings, visit and do educational internships with cooperating corporations at home and abroad, become exchange students to conduct studies at research institutes, and receive training on how to write and publish articles in international journals. The PhD students can thereby enhance their international mobility, understanding of various cultures, and communication skills and, as future leaders, establish the ability to convert sustainable thinking into research action plans.

This international and interdisciplinary research program was initiated by NCKU Overseas Hubs, actively constructing foreign and domestic research networks and gaining the active support of strategic partners. A total of 17 research teams have been formed, involving 96 foreign and domestic experts and scholars, 45 of whom are experts from institutes overseas. The foreign collaborating institutes are spread throughout Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore, including the University of Malaya, the University of Nottingham Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Mahidol University, Kasetsart University, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the Da Nang University of Science and Technology, and the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City actively proposed additional research grants for researchers at their university to encourage medical research collaborations between their researchers and those at NCKU, showing how much they value NCKU’s research strength and international collaboration network.

Aside from publishing their experiment achievements in international academic journals, the research teams will also share their sustainability research developments, challenges, and future solutions online in hopes of inspiring academic discussions and technological applications on a greater number of levels. The research teams and NCKU Overseas Hubs will hold a series of webinars from June to November to promote interactions in international talent and information, build tighter research networks, and hopefully induce more international interdisciplinary collaborations and sustainable development. The research webinars will be held every Wednesday using Webex. The topics span across fields including cognitive neuroscience, medicine, aerospace engineering, electrical and information engineering, and more. The topics of the upcoming webinars on June 30 and July 7 are Advances in COVID-19 detection and treatment” and “Enhancing Product Quality of Bio-Origin Product after Processing and Treatment. Readers are welcome to sign up online.
