NCKU and Delta Electronics (Thailand) Sign a Memorandum for Industry-Academia Collaboration and Cultivating International Talents

The NCKU-Butterfly Program has long been dedicated to fostering industry-academia-government collaboration with Southeast Asian countries by creating a diverse and mutually beneficial enrichment platform. With the aim of continuing industry-academia collaboration, training international talents, and enhancing students’ skills for linking up with industry, NCKU and Delta Electronics (Thailand) Company Limited (DET) signed a memorandum at the History Museum on Kuang-Fu Campus on June 2nd. At the signing ceremony, Mr. Jackie Chang, President of DET, and Mr. Cheng-Pin Lin, Delta’s India Region President, gave speeches on global business expansion and talent development.

Dr. Fong-Chin Su, NCKU Executive Vice President, thanked the distinguished guests for attending the signing ceremony and mentioned that NCKU continuously provides a variety of international courses and welcomes international students to study in Taiwan. Currently, there are 104 international students from Thailand at NCKU. In recent years, with the support of the Taiwan government, NCKU not only offers scholarships and internships for Southeast Asian international students but has also established an international science research centers in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These centers have multinational research projects in health care, industrial innovation and sustainable technology which have all yielded good results. NCKU now goes a step further by signing an MOU with DET will offer more diverse opportunities for study and internships. We hope this helps students more smoothly enter the job market upon graduation.

According to DET President Jackie Chang, international talents are a core driver of the company’s growth and a key factor for company’s moving towards sustainable development. He added that he is very happy to deepen industry-academia cooperation with NCKU, and DET will offer NCKU’s Southeast Asian international students job and internship opportunities. Students who pass the selection process can choose to complete their internship either in Taiwan or in Thailand during the summer and winter vacation.

Mr. Twekiat Janprajak, Thailand Trade and Economic Office Representative, believes the collaboration between the NCKU-Butterfly Program and DET not only offers scholarships to students, but it also enables them to master skills and lays a foundation to cultivate more competitive international talents. This would also benefit Thailand’s business development and human resources. This MOU not only supports students but also consolidates the partnership between Taiwan and Thailand.
Mr. Wei-Ming Hsu, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Representative, asserted that Thailand has continued to drive its “Thailand 4.0” economic development plan, which hopes to train more international business talents. In recent years, more and more Taiwan’s colleges and universities have responded to the “New Southbound policy” by offering various concepts of industry-academia collaboration. The NCKU-Butterfly Program seizes the trend toward Southeast Asian markets and offers favorable conditions through a tie-up with global company DET that enhances direct interaction between Taiwan’s academia and Thailand’s business, that not only offers more internships but also helps students find a suitable job through this platform.

On December 24th, 2019, NCKU and DET signed an MOU to implement a trial of the NCKU-Butterfly Program and selected three NCKU students to be interns at DET’s Thailand factories for the 2019 summer vacation. The 2022 MOU was signed to extend the existing cooperation between NCKU and DET after considering factors including the relaxation of Thailand’s entry restrictions for inbound visitors from Taiwan. The 2022 MOU maintains the original subsidy conditions and welcomes applications from Thailand’s international students at NCKU. In addition, the program increased internship offers from three to six students. Interns will be subsidized with on return flight from Taiwan to Thailand, a 500 US dollar monthly allowance during their internship period for living, accommodation, and transportation expenses. NCKU encourages students to actively pursue and explore future career opportunities during their internship and time at the university.

Delta’s India Region President Cheng-Pin Lin then introduced Delta India including the company’s overview and future expectations. Finally, Delta’s human resources team introduced the internship and job opportunities.

Prof. Yueh-Heng Li, Associate Vice President for NCKU International Affairs, noted that DET is fundamentally an ESG index-listed company that develops a broad range of high quality products that promise a sustainable future. In the area of education, DET also provides internships for NCKU students to broaden their horizons and experience Thailand’s local culture. According to Prof. Li, the idea for the NCKU-Butterfly Program was inspired by the metamorphosis of butterflies and comes from NCKU and DET’s original intention to cultivate future leaders. Therefore, through the scholarship and subsidy, international students at NCKU can pursue knowledge on the one hand, and familiarize themselves with international business culture on the other. After graduation, they will have an opportunity to join DET and contribute all they have learned.

NCKU’s NCKU-Butterfly Program collaborates with international companies to launch various customized talent development projects that aligns with Taiwan’s “New Southbound policy.” NCKU International Affairs has signed an MOU with seven companies, and continues to organize customized recruitment and matching events along with scholarships while developing specialized Southeast Asian business course. These efforts have all achieved excellent outcomes.
