2022 Commencement: NCKU’s First Graduation Party and Tassel-Turning Ceremony for International Students

NCKU Office of International Affairs held the graduation party and tassel-turning ceremony at the antique History Museum on Kuang-Fu Campus.
It is graduation season again! NCKU Office of International Affairs held the graduation party and tassel-turning ceremony at the antique History Museum on Kuang-Fu Campus on May 28th. Due to the concerns of large crowd gatherings, not all 2022 international graduates (totally 418 graduates) were able to participate in the ceremony; however, they still shared their expectations and wishes by live streaming.
In her commencement address, Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU, believed international students have brought multi-culture energies to NCKU.
“Regarding as the fundamental power, international students play the essential role at NCKU,” says Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU. President Su convinced that international students have poured multi-culture energies with their spectacular cultures, the invulnerable asset, to NCKU. Friendship among international and domestic students lets President Su recall the time of studying abroad. She reminded graduates should not view graduation as an end of the study but as a start of a new chapter. “No matter where you are heading for in the future, every day in NCKU is meaningful. Contributing your knowledge and ability to the world, which will also shape the future of NCKU and the world.”
Dr. Chun-Li Tsai, Associate vice president for Office of Academic Affairs, turned the tassel for international students respectively.

Dr. Lin mentioned that international students have conquered various difficulties under the COVID-19 pandemic. They left home countries, attended NCKU and finally got degree, which not only symbolizes the cultivation of knowledge but also shows their persistence and perseverance. He expected graduates would regard NCKU as their second home while they are flying higher to reach their goals.
Yen-Yi Fang, a Malaysian graduate of the Department of Accounting and Statistics, shared her prospect by live streaming.

When she started her journey to NCKU, her mother told her, “at home one depends on parents; abroad, one needs the help of friends.” Though she has not returned home for two years because of the pandemic, she still felt warm and relieved because of friends’ companionship. According to Fang, joys and sorrows were co-existed during the time at NCKU. However, “it’s life!” She will remember happy memories, accept unpleasant events, and face future challenge with the attitude of “examining the present, reviewing the past and looking forward to the future.”
Jui-Chun Chen, a Chinese PhD graduate of Department of Architecture, expected to dedicate to the interaction between Taiwan and China.
Jui-Chun Chen, a PhD graduate of Department of Architecture, noted that he is from Fujian, China. When he was little, he was curious about “the island at the other side of Taiwan Strait.” After arriving in Taiwan in 2019 autumn, the street scene and Taiwanese Hokkien made Chen feel like Taiwan is his second hometown. Commitment to research at NCKU and life at Tainan provided Chen a more dynamic perspective on Taiwan. Therefore, he expected to dedicate to the interaction between Taiwan and China. At the end of his speech, Chen paraphrased Yang-Ming Wang’s Chuanxi Lu (Record of Transmission and Practice), “when I have not come to Taiwan, I did not realize Taiwan. However, when I arrived in Taiwan, Taiwan becomes vivid and dynamic. Suddenly, I realize Taiwan is always in my heart.”
Indonesian PhD Graduate Yanuar Haryanto encouraged all graduates to think their position, to contribute their ability, and to lead to a bright future.
“Today we are here to celebrate our correct decision: attending NCKU.” Indonesian PhD Graduate Yanuar Haryanto believed NCKU offers abundant support and assists international students to interact with international and domestic students, which advances students’ self-enhancement. Yanuar Haryanto appreciated his teachers, family, friends and academic authorities which help him very much. He encouraged all graduates to think their position, to contribute their ability, and to lead to a bright future.
Indonesian graduate Hui-Yen Tseng sang a song named “Flying Birds” to encourage her and all graduates flying higher bravely without any fear. Then, Adrian Gomez, Nicaraguan undergraduate student of Department of Biomedical Engineering, sang “A Million Dreams” to encourage seniors to model themselves as the main character in the movie “The Greatest Showman”, always trust yourself even though everyone think you are crazy. Adrian Gomez believes all senior’s dream will come true with their persistence and willpower in the future.
At the end of the ceremony, staff of International Affairs introduced Fanny Wang, Director of Overseas Students and Scholars Service, and Li-Hui Wang, members of Overseas Students and Scholars Service, who are going to “graduate” from NCKU this year. The surprise made them burst into tears with joy. With student’s bouquet, they delivered speech and took photos happily, which deeply touched every guest in the ceremony.
Two members of NCKU Office of International Affairs will retire in 2022. They hold the bouquets presented by graduates.
In 2021, there are 418 international graduates from 38 countries registered in NCKU. Students are mostly come from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, China (Hong Kong and Macau are included), and Thailand. NCKU has devoted to promoting internationalization for years by go abroad to recruit students, set scholarships, enhance international students care and organize counselling services. Now, there are more than 2000 international students from more than 70 countries all over the world, at NCKU in total.
