NCKU 90th anniversary commemorative liquor packaging design wins awards from IDEA and the Golden Pin Design Award
The packaging design for NCKU’s 90th anniversary commemorative liquor has won consecutively the 2022 IDEA-Finalist and 2022 Golden Pin Design Award, in addition to being displayed at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (from November 29 to March 26, 2023) along with other winning designs. Specially designed to celebrate NCKU’s 90th anniversary, this commemorative liquor design was awarded during NCKU’s 91st anniversary, marking the beginning of a journey towards a century, bringing pride and joy to the NCKU community and alumni.
The IDEA, an award program established in 1980, is one of the oldest and most prestigious industrial design awards in the US. Over 30 countries have submitted entries in 2022, with over 2,200 projects being submitted. The Golden Pin Design Award was established in 1981, with a total of 2,765 entries in 2022 from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Japan, USA, India, Germany, Canada, etc. 687 projects made it to the end, winning the Golden Pin Design Award.
The layer-by-layer design represents the accumulation of history, and the choice of materials portrays the value of sustainable innovation
NCKU 90th anniversary commemorative wine packaging design was a joint project between the NCKU Art Center and the Department of Industrial Design, also collaborating with alumni, 22STUDIO director and founder Shen-Yao Yu and designer Wei-Che Lin. The layer-by-layer shape design represents the accumulation of history, whereas the designed packaging interactions invoked alumni nostalgia. In addition, the selection of materials symbolizes the value and significance of sustainable innovation.
To establish a new form of social responsibility, the NCKU team, led by President Jenny Su, put forward three aspects: field practice, brand identity, and university responsibility, integrating these aspects into the planning of the development of Matsu. By introducing various research and development resources, they wished to combine their academic energy with the rich cultural heritage of Matsu. Therefore, the Kaoliang liquor fermented and matured in the tunnels of Matsu was specially chosen as the NCKU 90th anniversary commemorative liquor, representing the spirit “Achieve Securely, Prosper Mutually!”

Min-Yuan Ma, Head of NCKU Art Center, pointed out that the team had to overcome many difficulties both internally and externally during the process of promoting this project. To promote the project, the participating teams have created many unprecedented records. Stemming from the project “Rising from the Battlefield, Reborn and Transformed” hosted by the College of Planning and Design, multiple administrative units such as the Secretariat Office, the Office of Finance, the Alumni Association Center, the Computer and Network Center, etc. have also participated. External units, in addition to 22STUDIO, also include Lienchiang County Government and Matsu Liquor Factory Co., Ltd. and other partners. Moreover, to integrate the concept of sustainability, Spring Pool Glass was invited to join this project.
NCKU 90th anniversary commemorative liquor is an integration of design-driven co-creation, forming a new framework to promote the university's social responsibility small donation mechanism, which can be deemed “Design-Driven Donation System for USR”
Chein-Hsu Chen, dean of the College of Planning and Design, stated: “This is not just a mere souvenir design, but an integration of design-driven co-creation. It forms a new framework to promote the university's social responsibility small donation mechanism, which can be deemed ‘Design- Driven Donation System for USR’. This is especially worthy of recognition.”
Receiving this recognition in the first year towards its 100th anniversary fully demonstrates that the NCKU 90th anniversary liquor does not just represent integration in design, but also a university that is worthy of upholding their social responsibility and the spirit of “Unite around One Torch, Stand Form Through Time as One”.
NCKU 90th anniversary commemorative liquor will be displayed in the Golden Pin Design Award exhibition, starting November 29th
