The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) announced 90 outstanding students who are recipients of the 20th Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship on April 22nd. The awarded students will each receive a monetary award of 10 thousand New Taiwanese Dollars, approximately 300 USD, as well as an encouraging and touching letter from Professor K. Y. Li. Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship has been viewed as the only scholarship endowed by students graduated under his mentoring.

The 20th Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship awarding ceremony was hosted by Professor K. Y. Li with many renowned attendees, such as Dr. M.C. Michael Lai, NCKU President, Mr. Stephen Wu, Chairman of E-Ton Solar Tech. Co. and the major contributor to Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship and recommenders of those recipients.

"Under the current economic crisis, the fund from this scholarship can probably become emergency aid to students whose families have been impacted by economic downturn", said NCKU President Lai. "The recipients should not only realize the spirit of Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship, but also inherit this spirit and spread it to the public in the future," President Lai added.

Mr. Stephen Wu, the Chairman of E-Ton Solar Tech. Co. encouraged students to keep diligently studying to become successful. He also stressed that innovation and setting ideal goal are very important.

Professor K. Y. Li, the former Dean of NCKU College of Engineering and currently an Emeritus Professor, expressed his gratitude to the contributors of Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship.

It reads on the letter from Professor K. Y. Li: Congratulation! After reviewing your application, I am delighted that NCKU has such a diligent and outstanding student as you. Although the scholarship is little, it has significant meaning which represents the cares from successful alumni. I sincerely hope you can bear this spirit in mind and caring for others all the time. I, as a senior alumnus of NCKU, am proud of you.

Unlike other domestic scholarships which are normally sponsored by companies or foundations, Professor K. Y. Li Scholarship established since 1990 was spontaneously bestowed by Professor K. Y. Li's students or friends who intended to improve Professor Li's personal life quality as well as to help upgrade Professor Li’s laboratory. However, Professor K. Y. Li turned students' goodness into greatness for public and established this scholarship to help more current students in need. Till now, students who were ever awarded this scholarship amounted to near 900.

Professor K. Y. Li, a former Dean of NCKU College of Engineering, is currently an Emeritus Professor in NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering. After conferred with his PhD overseas, Professor Li declined a government's job offer with high stipend. Rather, he chose to teach at NCKU with a lower income. Not only teaching and conducting researches, but also he devoted himself into promoting the juniors. He has always been viewing his students as his sons and daughters. Successful and famous students he has taught ever are dotting around the globe, such as Mr. Hsin-I Lin (former Vice Premier of Taiwan), Dr. Cheng-I Weng (President of Fo Guang University), Dr. Lawrence T. Wong (Chairmen of the Hong Kong Jockey Club), and Mr. Stephen Wu (Chairman of E-Ton Solar Tech. Co.).
