Academic Delegation of the NCKU Materials Science Department will visit National Kinmen Institute of Technology (KMIT) and Xiamen University (XMU) from March 31st to April 3rd. The goals of the delegation is to integrate the interdisciplinary professional knowledge and the abundant research manpower in NCKU with the local resources in KMIT and the research energy in XMU and to establish a cooperative alliance on regional reconstruction and human welfare.
Under the witness of former Kinmen County Magistrate Chu-Feng Lee, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has signed a strategic alliance with KMIT President Chin-Cheng Lee on July 8th, 2008, announcing to the world that both schools will cooperate, integrate the related resources of Xiamen University, Tunghai University as well as Graduate School of East Asian Studies in Harvard University, and create a 21st century Kinmen-Xiamen living area.
For more than one year, National Cheng Kung University has explored the future development of Kinmen and the structure of Kinmen-Xiamen living area with the aspects of academia, culture, geographic environment, etc. NCKU has participated and played an important role in activities such as Kinmen Summit Forum, Southern Fujian Culture International Academic Seminar and Quanzhou World Southern Fujian Cultural Festival. Kinmen County Magistrate Wo-Shi Lee, leading a country delegation, has also visited President Lai, Dean of College of Medicine Pin-Wen Lin, Dean of College of Engineering Wen-Teng Wu in early March, discussing matters related to health care, energy, water resources, aviation, urban planning and marine.
The Chairman of the NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Prof. Jiunn-Der Liao, expressed, “To increase the academic exchange between NCKU and KMIT and XMU, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has organized the trip to visit National Kinmen Institute of Technology and College of Material Sciences in Xiamen University from March 31st to April 3rd.”
Prof. Jiunn-Der Liao said, “NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering will form a research team with KMIT and promote the research and development of science and technology together with XMU. The topic of this mutual academic exchange will focus on functional materials, electrochemical energy nano-materials, thin films and surface engineering technology, etc. In addition, the Department of Materials Science may consider the possibility of opening classes in KMIT for the students in KIMT, XMU as well as Southern Fujian area.”
Prof. Liao also emphasized, “KMIT President Chin-Cheng Lee has a strong connection with NCKU. He was a former professor of the Graduate Institute of Political Economy and the former Secretary General of NCKU. He never denied that the construction process and the philosophies of KMIT were inherited from his experience in NCKU. President Lee has also expressed his anticipation for the academic visit of the NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering.”
In addition to academic research cooperation, National Cheng Kung University also has student-exchange cooperation with Xiamen University. With the visit, NCKU expects to strengthen the multidisciplinary exchange between professors and students of both schools and develop cooperative research on topics of mutual interests, thus motivating a closer academic relationship between two nearest top universities across Taiwan Strait.
