Former NCKU President Cheng-I Weng Received Honorary Doctor Degree of Literature from Gyeongsang National University, Korea

Former President Cheng-I Weng of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, currently the Honorary Professor of NCKU and President of Fo Guang University, has received Honorary Doctor Degree of Literature from Gyeongsang National University, Korea, on June 21st.

Former NCKU President Cheng-I Weng has an engineering background but he also loves literature. During his period of presidency at NCKU, he has promoted comprehensive education, engineering education with humane accomplishments and humanistic education with professional knowledge.

Even though the former NCKU President Weng specializes in mechanical engineering and has published over one hundred international academic papers in the field of mechanical engineering, he is also familiar with the shortcomings and needs of national higher education. Thus, Dr. Weng has been active in the innovation of teaching, the solidification of research energy and the promotion of humanistic education.

For example, former President Weng has introduced hundreds of large sculptures of national renowned artists to enrich the artistic atmosphere in campus, attracting more than 300,000 viewers and solidifying the humanistic and artistic foundations of NCKU.

The research achievements of former President Weng are fruitful as well. He has published over hundreds of international academic journal papers that are widely cited in national and international academia. Dr. Weng has also received Outstanding Research Award from National Science Council, Taiwan, and Academic Award from Ministry of Education, Taiwan, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in academic research.

Former NCKU President I-Cheng Weng has acted as Department Head and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at National Cheng Kung University, revealing his administrative management skills and assisting the development of school affairs, as well as Chairman of National Science Council, promoting national technology strategies, leading high-tech industries and research and development and elevating the capability of national economic industry and high-tech research and development.

When Dr. Cheng-I Weng acted as the President of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, R.O.C., he has eagerly promoted the development of nanotechnology and the research and development transfer of high-tech cutting-edge technology, contributing to the establishment of the ITRI South, located in Tainan County in Southern Taiwan, and balancing the development of science and technology in Southern Taiwan and Northern Taiwan.

Former NCKU President Cheng-I Weng received his bachelor degree of mechanical engineering at National Cheng Kung University and master and doctoral degrees of mechanical engineering at University of Rochester, United States.

Dr. Cheng-I Weng is formerly the President of Industrial Technology Research Institute, President of National Cheng Kung University, Chairman of Aviation Safety Council and Chairman of National Science Council and is currently the Honorary Professor at NCKU and the President of Fo Guang University.

Dr. Weng has received numerous academic awards and honors, including Outstanding Research Award and Academic Award from the Ministry of Education, NSC Research Fellow Award and Outstanding Research Award from National Science Council, Achievement Award from American Biographical Institute and Nanotechnology Medal from Nanotechnology and Micro System Association, as well as Honorary Professor of National Chiao Tung University, Honorary Professor of National Cheng Kung University, Fellow of Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Republic of China and Fellow of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.

Gyeongsang National University, South Korea, is one of the 10 Flagship Korean National Universities. It was founded in 1948 as Jinju Agricultural College and renamed as Gyeongsang National College in 1972. In 1980, the college was designated as a university.
