NCKU Century-Old Banyan Shoots Planted in National Quemoy University

President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has planted the shoots of century-old banyan from NCKU Banyan Garden in National Quemoy University on August 1st.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai said, “President Chin-Cheng Lee of National Quemoy University is from National Cheng Kung University and he has the spirit of modesty and sturdiness. The planting of the shoots of banyan symbolizes the strong relationship between National Cheng Kung University and National Quemoy University.”
President Lai also mentioned, “National Cheng Kung University has received support from Purdue University, United States, and thus become one of the top universities today. Following the same method, NCKU will contribute to the development of National Quemoy University and fulfill its social responsibilities.”
Director Shyh-Yu Shaw of NCKU Alumni Association Center expressed, “The banyan shoots planted in National Quemoy University is the offshoot of the banyan from the Banyan Garden, Kuang-Fu Campus, National Cheng Kung University. The transplantation symbolizes the inheritance of NCKU spirit, expecting National Quemoy University to become a top university like NCKU.”
Director Shyh-Yu Shaw also revealed, “This is the first time that the offshoot of the NCKU banyan has left the island of Taiwan. We hope the NCKU spirit of modesty and sturdiness can expand to off-shore island and the students there can carry on the heritage so as to pave the way for future generations.”
The century-old banyan in National Cheng Kung University was planted by the Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito in 1924. Cathay Life Insurance has adopted the banyan as its corporate logo and set up a fund to provide the annual maintenance fee for the tree. Thus, the banyan tree has become the campus landmark and the spiritual symbol of NCKU.
National Cheng Kung University and National Quemoy University have developed a strong relationship in recent years. Both universities have signed a strategic alliance, issued a joint declaration to the world, organized Kinmen Summit and International Conference on Southern Fujian Culture, planned to establish NCKU Hospital Kinmen Branch, and incorporated resources from Xiamen University, Tunghai University and East Asian Institute at Harvard University to create a new 21st century Kinmen-Xiamen living circle.
