Prof. Chiung-Hsiung Lai Appointed As New Dean of NCKU College of Liberal Arts

Prof. Chiung-Hsiung Lai of Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, who has extensive administrative experience and outstanding research achievements, was officially appointed as new Dean of College of Liberal Arts at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on August 1st, 2010.
The newly-appointed Dean Chiung-Hsiung Lai is grateful for the efforts and contributions of the former deans of College of Liberal Arts and he hopes to continue to promote internationalization and pursue innovation and excellence.
Prof. Chiung-Hsiung Lai, born in 1964, is the youngest dean of National Cheng Kung University since its establishment. He received his bachelor degree of Foreign Languages and Literature from NCKU Department of Foreign Languages and Literature and master degree of Critical Theory and doctoral degree of Critical Theory and English Literature from University of Nottingham, England.
Prof. Chiung-Hsiung Lai was the Director of Foreign Language Center, Chief Executive of NCKU Thinkers Salon, Director of NCKU English Eagle Project, and Vice Dean of College of Liberal Arts. He is currently the President of Philosophy Association in Tainan and Board Member of the ROC English and American Literature Association.
Specialized in Critical Theory, Contemporary English Literature and (Anti-) Globalization Studies, Dean Chiung-Hsiung Lai has published over 30 journal papers and conference papers.
He has also won numerous honors and awards, including First Prize of The National College English Poetry Contest in 1994, Second Prize of The Universe English Prose Contest in 1995, First Prize of The Phoenix Chinese Prose Contest in 1995, Winner of the Scholarship of the University of Nottingham (for PhD course) in 1997, Third Prize of Tainan City Chinese Poetry Contest in 1999, National Science Council Research Award in 2000, NCKU College of Liberal Arts Research Award in 2005, NCKU Outstanding Research Award in 2007 and NCKU Outstanding Teacher Award in 2007.
Dean Chiung-Hsiung Lai hopes to possess the spirit of the camel, which shoulders heavy responsibilities, to pass down the excellent tradition of the College of Liberal Arts, the spirit of the lion, which has ambitious dream, to establish the future vision of the college and welcome the new era of globalization, as well as the spirit of the baby, who owns vitality and creativity, to open a new door of excellence.
Dean Chiung-Hsiung Lai believed, as the new era of the 21st century approaches, he should devote himself to the common vision of the organization, lead the College of Liberal Arts to face the challenges together, form a mutually supported network, produce a competitive and innovative “cultural capital,” and manage and market the unique “brand” of the college’s humanistic education and research.
