Wen-Tong Lin, secretary general of University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP), briefed President Hwung-Hweng Hwung of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on the future outlook of UMAP on Oct. 21 during a courtesy visit to Tainan, southern Taiwan.

Lin, who led a 28-member delegation on the visit, said Taiwan has taken the position of the International Secretariat at the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific since 2011.

He said, “One of our goals is to maintain and renew the UMAP International website. Through this website, members of UMAP can know about other participating schools and students can know about the universities of their interests, especially in regard to credit transfer.”

Lin added that there are at least 40 countries in the Asian and the Pacific region, but the organization only has 16 member countries.

“Thus, we will encourage new members to join the organization and help member countries to participate in international conferences, board meetings and student or scholar programs.”

In response, Hwung told Lin that NCKU had the honor to contribute as the UMAP Taiwan National Secretariat for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009. It had promoted synergy as the key component of developing higher education across the Asian and Pacific region.

“As Taiwan took over the International Secretariat this year, an interactive platform will soon be provided for member countries and universities’ students,” Hwung said.

University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP), established in 1993, is a voluntary association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education sectors in the region.
