NCKU confers Honorary Doctorate Degree to Alumnus Kang Lung Wang

On December 18 th , NCKU conferred an honorary doctorate degree to an outstanding alumni of the 53 rd class of NCKU’s Department of Electrical Engineering – an internationally renowned semiconductor and nanotechnology pioneer and academician Kang Lung Wang. NCKU president Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su expressed that it was NCKU’s honor to confer this honorary doctorate degree to Kang Lung Wang who is one of the school’s very own and the school’s pride and joy.
 
 
Wang is a chair professor at UCLA’s Department of Electrical Engineering. After graduating from university, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to further his studies. His research focus was on spin electronics, semiconductor electronics, and nanotechnology. His research led to the continuous shrinking of integrated circuit manufacturing processes. In 2017, his research team discovered and confirmed the existence of the mysterious particle "Majorana fermion", the evidence for which had eluded researchers for eight decades.
 
 
NCKU president Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su presided over the award ceremony, and personally turned the honoree’s tassel and handing Wang his award certificate. Kang Lung Wang’s wife and several relatives and friends came to witness the ceremony.
 
 
In Kang Lung Wang’s "A Few Steps in My Career Random Walk" speech, Wang shared his learnings and career developments at different stages of his life in the past 40 years. With a smile, Wang admitted that he had no real blueprint for how his path would turn out: "Random walk is like being drunk. I had randomly stumbled to where I am now." However, Wang was also keen to point out that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. To have good development, there must be continuous learning. He reminded the students who were in the audience to first set the proper groundwork. Graduate school is all about research methodologies. If students have a solid foundation and use correct research methodologies, step by step they will move forward. Of course, one must have some level passion in their pursuits so that when difficulties come they can push onward.
 
 
Kang Lung Wang, who once headed the Focus Center for Functional Engineered Nano Architectonics (FENA) in the United States, proved the quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological insulators, both of which were major steps forward in the development of topological quantum platform systems. In 2017, a research team led by Professor Xia Jing from the University of California, Irvine discovered and proved the existence of Mayorana Fermion for the first time in the anomalous Hall effect platform system, and was awarded the Magnetism Award and the Nel Medal by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics in the following year.
 
 
Kang Lung Wang's students can be found throughout the industry-university-research community. Shouu-Jinn Chang, a professor at NCKU’s Department of Electrical Engineering and one of Wang’s students, expressed that he was happy to assist Taiwan in cultivating scientific and technological talent. Many doctoral students of the Ministry of Science and Technology's Graduate Student Study Abroad Program (GSSAP) have researched under Wang’s tutelage, including NCKU PhD students. NCKU awarded Kang Lung Wang “Outstanding Alumnus Achievement Award” in 2012. In 2016, Kang Lung Wang was elected as an academician of the Academia Sinica. In 2018, he was elected as an ITRI academician.
