NCKU professor receives Executive Yuan Outstanding Contribution in Science and Technology Award

Dr. Mi-Ching Tsai, a chair professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, was recently given Executive Yuan’s Award for Outstanding Contributions in Science and Technology to commemorate his remarkable contributions to the nation as a research and educator.

Executive Yuan Outstanding Contribution in Science and Technology Award is granted to Taiwan's citizens working in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, agriculture, and social sciences, especially those who have produced exceptional inventions or discoveries with significant impact or innovative contributions to society.

Holding the position of NCKU Research and Services Headquarters (RSH) director, Dr. Tsai’s research and contributions to the area of motor design and motor drives has not only enhanced industries in Taiwan, but also brought the country ahead on the international stage.

As a recipient of Executive Yuan Outstanding Contribution in Science and Technology Award, Dr. Tsai has just won the 2013 Merit NSC Research Fellow Award in March.

He already received three NSC Outstanding Research Awards during nine years, undertaken two three-year-term projects for NSC research fellow and demonstrated outstanding performance in research.

Dr. Tsai has received the NSC Outstanding Research Award in 1997, 1999 and 2001, the NSC Special Research Award in 2005, 2010 and 2013 as well as the Merit NSC Research Fellow Award.

Nicknamed “Motor Tsai”, Dr. Tsai graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) Department of Electrical Engineering and obtained his doctoral degree in engineering from Oxford University before returning to Taiwan to work at NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering.

From 2007 to 2010, Dr. Tsai was temporarily transferred by NSC to become director at the NSC Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tsai has served as the director of NCKU Electric Motor Technology Research Center (EMTRC), NCKU Metal Processing Technology Center (MPTC), NCKU Technology Transfer and Business Incubation Center and currently heads NCKU RSH.

Research-wise, Dr. Tsai has been awarded on many occasions at various levels. Amongst the awards are the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) Excellent Industrial Innovation Academic Award and Industrial Technology Advancement Award, Kwoh-Ting (K.T.) Li Technology Gold Medal Award, TECO Technology Award and Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE) Outstanding Engineering Professor Award.
