National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) continues to uphold its tradition of excellence in engineering education and research. In late April, the Chinese Institute of Engineers, Kaohsiung, announced the winners of the 2026 Engineering Professor Award, featuring two distinguished NCKU faculty members among the four national honorees: Professor Kai-Wei Chiang of the Department of Geomatics and Professor Han-Sheng Chuang, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. NCKU faculty members have consistently received this distinction annually since 2018, reflecting the university's profound research capacity and commitment to academic quality.
Advancing Geospatial AI: Professor Kai-Wei Chiang
Professor Kai-Wei Chiang is a renowned scholar with over 30 years of expertise in geospatial information engineering, navigation, and mobile technologies. He has made pioneering contributions to AI-enabled multi-sensor fusion, specifically developing a Constructive Neural Network (CCNs) integration framework that overcomes the constraints of traditional navigation filtering. His leadership in establishing Taiwan’s High-Definition (HD) mapping systems has provided critical standards and validation mechanisms for autonomous driving and intelligent transportation. Beyond research, Professor Chiang is recognized for his excellence in student mentorship, with many of his students receiving prestigious international awards.
Pioneering Precision Medicine: Professor Han-Sheng Chuang
Professor Han-Sheng Chuang, a leader in biomedical microfluidics and sensing technology, directs the Biomedical Microfluidics and Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (BMOEMS) Laboratory. His team’s groundbreaking work on Janus particle-based biosensing platforms was recently published in the prestigious journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, signaling world-class research impact. Professor Chuang’s work serves as a cornerstone for next-generation diagnostics and precision medicine. Furthermore, his dedication to industry-academia collaboration and technology transfer has successfully translated academic breakthroughs into practical, high-value social applications.

The Engineering Professor Award, established by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, Kaohsiung, honors scholars who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to engineering education, research and development, and industry-academia collaboration. The selection process is rigorous, making it a hallmark of honor within Taiwan’s engineering community. Award recipients are presented with a gold medal and a plaque to commemorate their outstanding achievements in both education and practical application.
