NCKU celebrates its 81 anniversary

In honor of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)’s 81th anniversary, faculty and students of the university put on a great parade Nov. 11 at the Kuang-Fu Sports Field drawing a large crowd and making the most featured anniversary ever with international touch.
Students from local and international community gathered in the early morning at this grand event and celebrated the university’s birthday where a student from Burkina Faso made a statement on behalf of NCKU students.
NCKU president Hwung-Hweng Hwung attended the opening ceremony and encouraged the students and faculty to lead a healthy life when delivering his opening remarks.
He also said that teachers and students had better to make exercise a regular habit and pointed out, “having sound mind and body will facilitate the academic study.”
President Hwung noted that NCKU has been endeavored to develop into a world-class comprehensive university and NCKU will definitely gain momentum from healthy students and faculty.
NCKU is an international top-tier university selected by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and according to the evaluation done by MOE, NCKU has ranked the first in terms of its active involvement with academia-industry collaboration for 4 consecutive years since 2008.
One of the best cases is the licensing agreement between NCKU and Novo Nordisk A/S, the second largest pharmaceutical company in Europe, for a total payment of US$ 13.3 million (approx NTD$400 million) on an anti-interleukin-20 (anti-IL-20) antibody, a potential new anti-osteoporosis and anti-rheumatoid arthritis drug.
In addition, according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in 2010, the number of SCI papers published in engineering from NCKU (2000 to 2010) is the best in Taiwan and ranked 14th in the world.
Based on Elsevier’s report in 2009, NCKU ranked 19th globally in the research papers of Alternative Energy.
NCKU aims at educating future leaders with humanistic and professional grounding, creativity, global vision and social consciousness, according to the university, “and promoting interdisciplinary research which can benefit our society and mankind.”
NCKU is a comprehensive university with 9 colleges: Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Planning & Design, Management, Social Science, Medicine and Bioscience & Biotechnology.
All the colleges are within walking distance on the main campus, allowing students to take interdisciplinary courses easily.
