NCKU professor won IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production

Dr. Fan-Tien Cheng from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has won 2013 IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production with his successfully developed Automatic Virtual Metrology (AVM) system and its plentiful commercialized system application results, the university announced Jan. 14.

With his leading research in virtual metrology, Chair Prof. Cheng of Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems, NCKU, is the first Taiwanese scholar to win the title and he will be honored during an award luncheon to be held at the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, May 9, Karlsruhe, Germany.

IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS) established IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production to recognize original innovative research and concepts since 2007.

RAS recognizes Dr. Cheng for his outstanding accomplishments and service to RAS and the Robotics and Automation community.

The commercial application product as well as the current and future impact of the commercial product is a fundamental element of the merit for selection.

The AVM system developed by Professor Fan-Tien Cheng can save time and manpower of implementing the virtual metrology system to all the machines of the same type, and maintain the accuracy of virtual metrology in the meantime.

In addition, it can automatically evaluate process-and-metrology data online and in real time.

Virtual metrology is a method to conjecture online and real-time manufacturing quality of a process tool based on data sensed from the process tool, according to Dr. Cheng, adding that it can not only be applied to monitor the machine performance, improve the production process but help to detect the abnormalities to prevent the industry from great cost loss.

To date, the industries adopt sampling inspection to do the product-quality monitoring for cost saving; however, comprehensive quality management cannot be achieved.

To meet the need of a more economical way of inspection, virtual metrology technology development is a must for the industry, said Dr. Cheng.

Acknowledged by the automation field the innovation and excellent practical application capabilities of AVM, Professor Cheng has won national awards including the 2011 Award for Outstanding Contributions in Science and Technology from the Executive Yuan, R.O.C., and 2012 National Invention and Creation Award - Gold Medal” from Ministry of Economic Affairs, R.O.C. in succession.


Winning the 2013 IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production has brought the high-esteemed recognition from the international academic community to Dr. Cheng.

The previous winners of IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production are Masahiro Fujita, in 2007, Rodney Brooks, in 2008, Alex Zelinsky, in 2010, and J. Kenneth Salisbury, in 2011.

Dr. Cheng received his bachelor degree of Electrical Engineering at NCKU in 1976, master degree of Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU) in 1982 and doctoral degree of Electrical Engineering at OSU in 1989.

He has been the Director Institute of Manufacturing Engineering at NCKU from 1998 to 2001, the Associate Editor IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation from 2000 to 2004, the Chairman IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, Taipei Chapter, from 2003 to 2004, the Distinguished Professor Institute of Manufacturing Engineering at NCKU from 2003 to 2009, the Convener and Director of Automation Engineering Program at National Science Council from 2006 to 2009, the Secretary General Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers from 2007 to 2008.

He is currently the Director of e-Manufacturing Research Center at NCKU and the Chair Professor of Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems at NCKU.
