TCUS sets up Taiwan’s first joint student-athlete admission

Taiwan Comprehensive University System (TCUS) pioneered the nation’s first joint undergraduate admission of student athletes, with a student-oriented purpose behind its establishment, TCUS announced at a press conference held at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, Mar. 1.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung hailed the joint effort and said that TCUS’ attempt in setting up the first ever student-athlete admission has taken students as the main consideration.
He added, “This effort has not only helped save time and money for the students and their parents as a one-time registration enables students to have a chance to be admitted into one of the four universities.”
TCUS was established in 2011 jointly by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) and National Chung Cheng University (NCCU) -- all in southern or central Taiwan -- in order to integrate educational resources in that part of Taiwan and to drive a comprehensive development of various industries in Taiwan.
“The joint admission effort also allows sharing of resources among the four universities, where students can choose courses among these universities and the training credits will be recognized by all four universities,” according to President Hwung who also announced that TCUS will continue the effort of integrating resources, hoping that in the future admission also can be established at the post-graduate level.
NCKU Executive Vice President Huey-Jen Su as the spokesperson of TCUS, said, “ Since Dr. Paul Ching-Wu Chu took up the position of the Honorary Chancellor of TCUS last November, the performance of academia-industry collaboration in all four universities has shown signs of progress. And now the launching of student-athlete admission represents another achievement of joint endeavor of TCUS.”
TCUS’ joint admission for student athlete will commence soon after the 102 academic year as students who excel in sports can start applying from now onwards.
“The success of integration among four universities has shown the sincerity in establishing collaboration with each other,” stressed Fu-Hsing Lu, NCHU Dean of Office of Academic Affairs.
“The core value of this joint admission effort originates from the students, with the main considerations focusing on students,” Lu emphasized.
“This is a win-win for both students and the universities,” said Lu, and all four universities will simplify the procedures of admission of student athletes, especially in the aspect of enrolment, registration, and examination affairs and then ease the hassle for students during the application process.
