NCKU sets up center for pharmaceutical regulatory science

The Center for Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science has been officially set up at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, to promote the administration and education of pharmaceutical regulation in Taiwan, the university announced Mar. 25.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Health, Executive Yuan, and NCKU signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Mar. 25 for building a platform of pharmaceutical regulatory science to jointly promote pharmaceutical education, cultivate personnel training for pharmaceutical administration.
To formulate the white paper on food and drug policy and non-prescription medicines management policy is the priority for the center which will serve as a national platform for the government, the academia and the industry to integrate the resources and talents.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung and FDA Director-General Jaw-Jou Kang signed the MOU on behalf of their respective organizations.
The Center for Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science is set up under NCKU Research and Services Headquarters and will be developed into a university-level research center in the future, according to President Hwung.
With the center, NCKU will help the government to constitute pharmacy and pharmaceutical affair regulation and administration and to boost up the drug industry in Taiwan as well.
“Good communication between the academia and the industry is crucial in forming a feasible policy for the government,” according to Kang adding that the government needs to refer to NCKU’s experience when NCKU is prospective in developing bio-medical devices.
A well-established platform for the academia-industry exchange is fundamental to national pharmaceutical administration, said Kang, and that’s why FDA needs to cooperate with NCKU in formulating food and drug administration policy.
Dr. Yea-Huei Yang Kao, Director of the center, who is also the professor of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at NCKU, said the missions of the center includes conducting research on pharmaceutical regulation and promoting international-collaborated efforts in pharmaceutical administration.
The center currently is working on the policies regarding the security of drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics, added Kang.
