NCKU, ASE host R & D Application Forum to promote collaboration

20E3 innovative technology R & D Application Forum co-organized by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE) took place at NCKU recently to present the latest research findings.
NCKU and ASE, a leading company of semiconductor assembly and test services, have a close relationship in academic-industry cooperation for years. Both sides have shared a common aspiration of promoting the world’s largest semiconductor packaging center in Tainan.
In addition to the forum, an agreement on semiconductor packaging technology and process program was also signed by both sides to signify a longer-term of collaboration.
President Hwung-Hweng Hwung on behalf of NCKU and General Manager of Group Engineering Integration & Material Business Unit J J Lee on behalf of ASE Group signed the agreement, May 10.
A total of 8 projects were presented in the forum. Dean Pao-Shan Yu of NCKU College of Engineering and Prof. Kwang-Lung Lin of Materials Science and Engineering, the project leader, led the team members to present their findings.
J J Lee, on the other hand, led the senior technical team to attend and share R & D results and mechanisms in the forum.
Lee also on behalf of ASE presented certificates of outstanding scholar to 8 professors and scholarship for 18 outstanding students.
President Hwung said that Taiwan's research energy is mostly centered at the universities; however, professors have to see outside the campus and try to cooperate with the industry.
The long-term collaboration between ASE and NCKU has been very fruitful in which each of the projects collaborated by senior researchers from NCKU and ASE.
The company was founded in 1984 and is based in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, according to Lee, adding that The ASE Group is the world's largest provider of independent semiconductor manufacturing services in assembly, test, materials and design manufacturing.
He said, “The R & D expenditures increased from 4% per annum to 5%, investing nearly 2 billion dollars.” The research and technical cooperation between ASE and NCKU will be continuingly strengthened in the coming future.
In addition to the cooperation on the field of engineering, ASE is planning to strengthen basic scientific research by collaborated with NCKU College of Engineering.
