NCKU wise club to mark new pinnacle for Taiwan’s petrochemical industry
Tainan, Taiwan, May 15, 2013
To build industry-academia collaboration and enhance the value of the petrochemical industry, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) initiated the establishment of “The Wise Club – The Interaction Platform towards High-Value Petrochemical Industry.”
With the aim of integrating research resources of the industry, the government and academia, the newly formed club was officially inaugurated on May 11.
The opening ceremony gathered the industry’s most important participants from all over Taiwan as the club aspired to “gather experts everywhere to create the pinnacle of the petrochemical industry”. This has created a new record for Taiwan’s petrochemical industry, offering abundant raw materials and high-value products for the downstream chain of the petrochemical industry.
Held at the Bo-Lin Lecture Hall at the NCKU Department of Chemical Engineering, the club’s new plaque was officially unveiled by a group of distinguished guests, including NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, NCKU Department of Chemical Engineering Professor Chuh-Yung Chen, Tasco Chemical Corporation General Manager Ping-Ho Liu, Formosa Petrochemical Corporation Chairman Bao-Lang Chen, Dairen Chemical Corporation Chairman Hsien-Chang Chen, Chi Lin Optoelectronics Chairman Richard Guang-Fu Song, and representatives from other companies in a lively and exciting ceremony.
NCKU President Hwung welcomed the participation of industry players in the petrochemical sector while taking the opportunity to praise NCKU Department of Chemical Engineering Professor Chuh-Yung Chen for his contributions to the petrochemical world, saying that Professor Chen should be given awards for his achievements.
“The petrochemical industry is the mother of all industries in our country, but in the past few years, Taiwan’s petrochemical industry has been facing the pressure from its competitors from the Middle East, Mainland China and ASEAN countries,” explained President Hwung who was glad to see the cohesiveness shown by Taiwanese petrochemical players. “Hence, we must refine our own petrochemical industry, then only we will have better development and stronger competitiveness.”
Professor Chuh-Yung Chen, the chairman of the Wise Club who initiated the interaction platform towards high-value petrochemical industry, mentioned that Taiwan’s petrochemical industry is currently facing both internal and external problems.
He explained that internal problems were depicted by the closure of Kuo Kuang Petrochemical plant and the country’s fifth naphtha cracker in 2013, as well as shortage of raw materials faced by the industry.
Professor Chen continued to add that on the external side, Taiwan’s petrochemical industry is also facing pressure from Mainland China and South Korea, thus creating difficulties for Taiwanese petrochemical firms. Based on figures, annual foreign sales in previous years totaling 100,000 million NTD has reduced to 1000 million NTD per year, indicating that now is the key moment of the survival of the Taiwanese petrochemical industry.
Hence, Professor Chen suggested that the relevance of the industry-academia collaboration must be closely integrated in order to enhance the added-value of the industry.
“In the future, the Wise Club will integrate as well as combine the academic world with the upstream, middle stream and downstream manufacturers in the petrochemical industry, thus using research and development of new products to increase its industry value and competitiveness,” revealed Professor Chen.
“The Wise Club will also form a consultation team consisting of senior CEOs of the industry and retired professors, and form an executive team comprising academic experts and corporate bodies to set up technical cooperation platform, conduct personnel training, organize market intelligence, and also offer professional guidance, information exchange and so on.”
The Wise Club will also strive to promote technical upgrade and labor integration among upstream, middle stream and downstream manufacturers as well as strengthen competitiveness through binding technology focusing on synthesis, purification, processing and testing in order to enhance the development and competitiveness of Taiwan’s petrochemical industry and actively encourage Taiwan’s petrochemical industry to head towards developing functional materials of “high value” or “special quality.”
The Taiwanese petrochemical industry started developing in the 1960s. Today, Taiwan’s petrochemical industry has become the 8th largest in terms of scale in the global petrochemical industry, as it has been supplying petrochemical raw materials to the textile industry, plastic industry, electronics industry and automobile industry, thus becoming Taiwan’s backbone industry.
The Southern region is an important petrochemical center where more than 20 percent of the petrochemical companies in Taiwan are based in the southern region, occupying one third of the total turnover of Taiwan’s petrochemical industry.
