NCKU College of Medicine launches new book on 30th Anniversary

The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Medicine recently launched a book titled “Heirloom – 30 Years at NCKU College of Medicine” on the 30th anniversary of the college.
Recording the monthly “Heirloom Show” for 5 years since the college’s 25th anniversary, the book included speeches in 47 shows, highlighting the development, changes and history in all the departments in the college.
The new book launching ceremony on February 24 was hosted by the Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, Dr. Chun-Yen Chang, and attended by many important guests including NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, former College of Medicine Dean Chyi-Her Lin, many other contributors of the college’s 30-year history and the authors of the book to recall the memories of the college in the past 30 years.
NCKU President Hwung expressed his gratitude to former NCKU President Han-Min Hsia for his vision and effort in establishing the college, as well as the college’s founding Dean Kun-Yen Huang for foresight, leading NCKU towards a more complete comprehensive university and the number two position in the ranking of universities in Taiwan.
“The achievements of NCKU College of Medicine were evident in the past 30 years,” stressed President Hwung as he revealed his hopes that the college can reach greater heights in the coming 30 years.
Dr. Chang revealed, NCKU College of Medicine’s 30th anniversary celebrations started a week ago with speeches on special topics given by experts and scholars while the book launching ceremony represented the climax of the event.
“Started in 2009, the ‘Heirloom” show was carried out by inviting scholars to give talks on the memories of the college since it was founded,” noted Dr. Chang.
“Heirloom” is a book which not only offers a fun read for the medical people, but also presents the results of the college’s emphasis on medical humanities, Dr. Chang added.
The founder of the “Heirloom” show Dr. Ming-Chyi Pai, also the first convener of the college’s committee, took out the poster and photo of the first show depicting former college Dean Dr. Huang’s speech to give a flashback of the activity.
“What is the spirit of NCKU College of Medicine? What is the tradition of NCKU College of Medicine? The answers to these questions are in this book,” explained Dr. Pai as he emphasized on the importance of records as a means of keeping memories.
The book, titled “Heirloom – 30 Years at NCKU College of Medicine”, comprises many interesting stories.
One of them is about the lighting pottery at the Department of Nursing, where Associate Professor Miao-Fen Yen recorded how the lighting was decided during that time and the process of searching for potter masters to make the lighting.
Former Deputy Dean of the college, Dr. Mao-Hsiung Lee, also told a story that involved the top-management of the college and important records when the college was first established.
