Dr. Mi-Ching Tsai, a chair professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering,
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, was recently given the 2013 Merit NSC Research Fellow Award from National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan to commemorate his excellent academic achievements in the past ten years.

The Merit NSC Research Fellow Award was initiated in 1995 by NSC to honor the achievements of those who have been awarded NSC Outstanding Research Award over three times, and have accomplished 3-year-term project for NSC Research Fellow twice, according to NSC.

Holding the position of NCKU Research and Services Headquarters (RSH) director, Dr. Tsai’s research and contributions in the area of motor design and motor drives has not only enhanced industries in Taiwan, but also brought the country ahead on the international stage.

As a recipient of the Merit NSC Research Fellow Award, Dr. Tsai has already received three NSC Outstanding Research Awards in nine years, undertaken two three-year-term projects for NSC research fellow and demonstrated outstanding performance in research.

Dr. Tsai has received the NSC Outstanding Research Award in 1997, 1999 and 2001, the NSC Special Research Award in 2005, 2010 and 2013 as well as the Merit NSC Research Fellow Award.

Nicknamed “Motor Tsai”, Dr. Tsai graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) Department of Electrical Engineering and obtained his doctoral degree in engineering from Oxford University before returning to Taiwan to work at NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering.

From 2007 to 2010, Dr. Tsai was temporarily transferred by NSC to become director at the NSC Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tsai has served as the director of NCKU Electric Motor Technology Research Center (EMTRC), NCKU Metal Processing Technology Center (MPTC), NCKU Technology Transfer and Business Incubation Center and currently heads NCKU RSH.

Research-wise, Dr. Tsai has been awarded on many occasions at various levels. Amongst the awards are the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) Excellent Industrial Innovation Academic Award and Industrial Technology Advancement Award, Kwoh-Ting (K.T.) Li Technology Gold Medal Award, TECO Technology Award and Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE) Outstanding Engineering Professor Award.

Due to his focus on motor research and invention, Dr. Tsai established NCKU EMTRC which has been one of the best performing research centers under NCKU RSH.

Most importantly, the research center has been serving as a vital communication platform between academia and the industry.

For over 20 years, NCKU EMTRC has not only helped solve various problems in the industry and developed numerous types of motors, but also nurtured talents who have served in Taiwan and China.

In addition to his contributions to the industry, his “Servo Control Lab” at NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering carries out experiments and research on integrated technology of advanced and innovative electromechanical motors.
