NCKU Energy Experts Develop Energy-Saving Fuels
(TAINAN, TAIWAN, August 6) --- A team of researchers from the NationalChengKungUniversity has released an interdisciplinary study on developing emulsified fuel oils using industrial wastewater, which not only saves 14% in terms of fuel usage but also cut down emission of pollutants and fume gas of grave environmental concerns. Professor Wen-Jhy Lee of Environment Engineering of NCKU called it “Using oily wastewater emulsified fuel technique”, which can reduce more than 5.4 million tons of carbon dioxide emission nationwide. This breakthrough can save around 30 billion NT dollars in fuel costs and provides an alternative to treatment of industrial wastewater, especially oil-containing one.
According to Professor Lee, NCKU green-energy research group discovered emulsified oil made from 80% heavy oil, 0.1% surfactant and 19.9% water as “environmental benign” fuel that could trim down emission of air pollutants and save energy. This achievement also made it published on the international prestigious journal of Environment Science & Technology (ES&T), add Professor Lee.
“This technique also provides alternatives to recycle industrial wastewater containing heavy oil, which turns into valuable fuel to boost energy conservation,” said Professor Lee. The NCKUSustainableEnvironmentalTechnologyResearchCenter will provide platform for industrial technology transfer with the aim to prevail environmental benign and sustainable techniques, such as emulsified fuel, to ease environmental concerns and energy conservation.
