NCKU Team Won in Robot Contest

The Advanced Intelligent Robots and System Lab of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), led by the Professor Tzuu-Hseng S. Li, outperformed and broke many world records in the 13th FIRA Robot World Cup 2008 which was recently held July 22~25 in Qingdao, China. The total medals the NCKU team won was four champions, two second-place awards and three third-place awards. The FIRA Robot World Cup, an annual event of the Federation of International Robot Soccer Association (FIRA), has now attained world recognition as a robot festival.

The humanoid robot – aiRobot-3, designed and developed by two MS graduate students, Shao-Wei Lai and Chun-Ming Chang, won the first place in All Round of Humanoid Robot World Cup Soccer Tournament (HuroCup) with three champions on Sprint, Marathon and Basketball, two second-places on Obstacle Run and Lift & Carry, two third-places on Weight Lifting and Penalty Kick. The other humanoid robot of the team also got a third-place in 3 vs. 3 AndroSot.

NCKU’s humanoid robot – aiRobot-3 broke the world record in the Sprint by 20.5 sec and in the Marathon by 4 min and 46 sec, as well as in the Lift and Carry by 70 CDs.
The NCKU Distinguished Professor Tzuu-Hseng S. Li, who also chairs the AndroSot of the FIRA, said that there were 7 events in this year’s FIRA Robotworld Cup, including Sprint, Penalty Kick, Obstacle Run, Lift and Carry, Weight lifting, Marathon, and Basketball, all of which were more difficult than those in previous years.
The Sprint event, formerly named the Robot Dash event, is a short distance race for humanoid robots. The goal is for the robots to move as quickly as possible from a start line to the finish line for a series of zigzag segments. The NCKU’s humanoid robot spent 20 seconds only to finish this game and broke the world record.

The Marathon event is an endurance race over 48 meters. The robots must follow a colored track which has straight and curve lines. The NCKU’s humanoid robot took less than 5 mins to break the world record.

Based on experience from the Basketball competition of the 2007 HuroCup, the competition was made more difficult by requiring the robot to pick up the ball from a random position to throw a ball into a colored target. The NCKU’s humanoid robot won the first place in the event by sophisticated skills of picking and throwing balls.

The NCKU’s humanoid robot won the second place in the Lift and Carry, on which the robots are required to use active balancing. The robots will be fitted with a small basket. The robots repeatedly walk across an uneven terrain from one side to the other. Once the robot reaches the end of the uneven terrain, the referee adds small heavy obstacles into the basket. The robot must compensate for the extra weight and continue to cross the uneven terrain. The robot that can carry the most weight is declared the winner of the event.

In the Obstacle Run, the robot must move from one end of the playing field to the other as quickly as possible. However, in this competition, a number of obstacles are distributed over the playing field. The robot must navigate over, under, or around the obstacles and reach the end zone. The NCKU’s humanoid robot won the second-place award in this event.

The goal of the Weight Lifting event is to develop robots that can lift and balance heavy weights. In the event of the Penalty Kick, the robot must approach and kick a ball positioned somewhere in the ball area. A robot from a different team will act as goal keeper during this event. The aiRobot-3, the NCKU’s humanoid robot won the third-place awards in both events.

FIRA robot soccer, a brainchild of Prof. Jong-Hwan Kim, KAIST, began in 1995 and the first international championship was held at KAIST, Daejeon, Korea in 1996.

The Federation of International Robot-soccer Association (FIRA) was established on June 5, 1997 during the micro-robot soccer tournament (MiroSot’97) held at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea. FIRA Robot World Cup is held every year on global-scale. FIRA Robot World Congress is held along with FIRA Cup, where all participating teams will submit and present papers on their robots and schemes for sharing the expertise and technology for building the soccer robots.
