Remarkable Best Student Paper Awarded to A NCKU Postgraduate
“Observation of the Coherent Turbulent Structure Under Breaking Wave”, a paper presented at the 18th International Polar and Offshore Engineering Conference by Mr. Zhi-Cheng Huang, a doctoral candidate from the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was elected as the only “Best Student Paper” and brought in Mr. Huang with the grand prize worth 1,000 USD. Professor Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Mr. Huang’s advisor and also the Senior Vice President of NCKU, praised his effort and hard-working attitude. The paper is also about to be published on the International Journal of Offshore and Polar Engineering.
With more than 500 papers submitted as well as scholars and experts from more than 50 countries convened at Vancouver, Canada, the venue of this year’s International Polar and Offshore Engineering Conference, one of the biggest international conferences, held annually by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE). All the abstracts of papers presented will be included in the EI Database.
Mr. Zhi-Cheng Huang, who spent all summer at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California – San Diego (UCSD), attributed this award to the excellent learning environment provided by the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering at NCKU and his advisor, Professor Hwung-Hweng Hwung, who offered many opportunities to conduct in-depth research and encouraged him to make top-tier research.
The content of Mr. Huang’s awarded paper is mainly to explore the turbulent structure in the surf zone, which is thought to have great impact on global energy convection, the net water vapor exchange and the ocean ecosystem. He also provided quantitative detail of turbulent structure under breaking wave, contributing fundamental theory to physical mechanics.
Mr. Huang further explained his paper as follows:
Observation of the spatial dependent evolution of turbulent structure in surf zone is presented through quantitative measurements of internal flow fields of spilling waves propagating on a 1:20 slope by the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The ensemble average was calculated with turbulence decomposition by repeating the same experiment for twenty-five times in each Field of View (FOV). Seven FOVs were integrated to represent the global results, which covers the breaking wave from the outer to inner surf zones. Results manifest that a relative large turbulent motion is initially organized in the crest of braking wave in bore-established region. As the wave crest passes, this turbulent structure will then stretch downward to the lower interior region of water column. Turbulent convection and diffusion terms were estimated. It is found that the convection transport is much significant to spread the turbulent structure from the wave crest to trough region.
Mr. Huang also expected to collaborate again with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to further investigate the thermodynamic properties in the surf zone, which similarly has great impact on global greenhouse effect, i.e. another popular research issue.
