Spanish CSIC Delegation Visited NCKU for Collaboration

Without diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Spain, a delegation of Spanish officials and scientists, led by Professor Rafael Rodrigo, the president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas) - the largest public research body in Spain, visited the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) at Tainan to establish academic collaboration.

One of their scheduled meetings was to meet Academician Michael M.C. Lai, the President of NCKU and to attend the 2nd Taiwan-Spain Workshop on Micro/Nano Electronics on 14th and 15th. The goal of the visit and the undergoing conference was to generate more intentional and in-depth conversations and collaboration between Taiwan and Spain in the field of Micro/Nano Electronics.

During their meeting with President Lai, President Rafael Rodrigo of CSIC expected to explore collaboration possibilities based on the common research interests, especially on nanotechnology. “Jointly holding workshop with the Center of Micro/Nano Technology Center (CMNST) of NCKU will be viewed as threshold for collaboration between both sides,” added Professor Rafael Rodrigo. Spanish delegation also discussed the outline and goals of co-host future research projects during their visit at CMNST with NCKU experts.

Nanotechnology is a field of interdisciplinary sciences and engineering. President Lai of NCKU stressed that NCKU has the advantages to develop cross-field nanotechnology because of the interlinked and comprehensive campuses adjacent to one another. Professor Rafael Rodrigo complimented NCKU as a top-notch university with strong research work force and research funding, which will be the foundation to future collaboration.

The members of Spanish delegation include Professor Rafael Rodrigo, the President of CSIC and Professor Jose Sanchez Serrano, the vice President of CSIC, Professor Philippe Godignon, Professor Alvaro San Pauloa, Professor Francesc Perez Murano, Professor Jaume Esteve, Professor Javier Tamayo, Professor Isabel Alonso, Professor Arben MerKoçi, Professor José Maria Ripalda, and Professor Pablo Ordejón with presentations during the workshop.

During the workshop, there are five research fields covered by Taiwanese experts, including silicon-based nanodevices, nano-fabrication of chemicals, nano-fabrication in integrated circuits and systems, nano-biochemical sensors and nanomaterials. On the other hands, the Spanish researchers will make presentations with emphasis on nanostructures for nanophonics, Si nanowires for nanomechanics, carbon nanotube and nano-piezoelectric materials.

Novel research in interdisciplinary is prospering with the continual development of technology and the spring-up of Micro/Nano materials. Therefore, Micro/Nano science is developed. Meanwhile, the choke point of the development of electronic component microminiaturization can also be broken through the utilization of nanotechnology. It is anticipated that the novel materials, specialties, devices, appliance, and accurate measuring techniques from nanotechnology will bring an impact on the energy storage, optoelectronic, computer, recording media, machinery, medical, genetic engineering, environmental and resource, and chemical industry. Advancing practical nanotechnology application to reach economic achievement is the mission of all the developed countries today.

The aims of this workshop are to promote international interchange of Micro/Nano electronic techniques, to better publicize the image of domestic Micro/Nano electronic researches and development, to boost and establish international transdisciplinary collaboration, to incubate Micro/Nano electronics researchers and to enhance the progress of Micro/Nano electronic related industries.
