NCKU President’s Letter appealing for support from Alumni to overcome economic adversity
The economic downturn has severely hit the job and career market. Faced with the incoming very competitive job-hunting fever among graduates, National Cheng Kung University President, Academician Michael M.C. Lai, wrote a letter to appeal to NCKU alumni who are in the managerial position or entrepreneurs in various walks of life for providing more job positions to NCKU new or prospective graduates. In the letter, President Lai stated that the adversity can be overcome with NCKU alumni’s tradition on caring and helping for each other.
Followed by a letter recently written to NCKU students to provide financial aids for students, President Lai also further wrote a letter to exclaim for job openings for prospective NCKU graduates to successful alumni.
President Lai stated that this economic downturn possibly continues for a while according to financial experts, and expected many prospective graduates would encounter obstacles in job seeking after graduation in 4 months. It is shown that about half of NCKU graduates choose to work after graduation (the annual NCKU graduates are about 5 thousands). With the scarce job openings, the job seeking becomes more competitive. As a NCKU President, he wrote that he has the responsibilities to help current students and graduates to cope with the economic storm.
To overcome the economic storm, NCKU students need not only scholarships and grants, work-study and assistant jobs in campus but also aids from NCKU alumni outside the campus. President Lai said that NCKU’s prestigious tradition is to caring and helping for each other, generation by generation. NCKU graduates have been ranked as “industry favorites” for 10 consecutive years. However, in the trouble period, more job openings are expected by social freshmen and alumni who has been hit by financial troublesome to go through the obstacle. Meanwhile, NCKU also plays a role as looking for human force with creativity, practicality, enthusiasm and spirit of cooperation to revitalize the industries.
Furthermore, President Lai also worried that the financial crisis will impact on some NCKU alumni. Therefore, NCKU will work out some substantial plans to aid unemployed alumni, including providing job-opening information and continuous education, increase the quota of research assistant, post-doctoral researches, promote the industrial academia collaboration plans, encourage the development of intellectual property and assist in starting a business in accordance with the policies of Ministry of Education and National Science Council. In addition, NCKU will also expedite the construction of campus hard and soft facilities to stimulate the economy.
