NCKU Team Up with Russian Academic Institute on Submarine Groundwater Investigation
Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has worked on collaborative research project with the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Science, which is also the oldest and the largest Russian research center in the field of oceanology. This project started from June of 2008 and will end at December of 2010, regarding monitoring, assessment and management implication of submarine groundwater discharge in Taiwan. The goals of this project are to develop guidelines and sound techniques for detecting the signatures of Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) at the small-to-regional spatial scales in the coastal waters surrounding Taiwan and determining its extent and importance, as well as functional vulnerability of the local marine environment to SGD. The project also aims to develop scientific insights into physical and chemical processes governing the assimilation of SGD within the study area and to obtain quantitative estimate of the probable actual importance of SGD for the region to the extent feasible.
The representatives of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Science, led by Prof. Peter O. Zavialov, visited NCKU Senior Vice President Hweng-Hwung Hwung on 19th Feb. to express their gladness in collaboration with NCKU and expected to extend and strengthen the collaborative work. Aside from recognizing the idea of enhancing collaboration, NCKU SEVP Hwung also expressed satisfaction on the result of the research investigation and seawater collection along with coastal region of Pingtung County.
The research group members from the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Science include Prof. Peter O. Zavialov, Dr. Anatoly Vasiliy Grigoryev, Dr. Boris Alexandrovich Gureev, Dr. Grabovskiy, Alexander Borisovich, Dr. Oleg Kopelevich, Dr. Vadim Pelevin and Dr. Viacheslav V. Kremenetskiy. They completed the oceanic investigation and water sampling along with coastal region of Pingtung County. In the future, possible locations of groundwater effluent will be identified with the water analysis and surface anomalies derived from available satellite imagery in different spectral bands. Subsequently, the effluent flow rate could be estimated.
The P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Science has remarkable achievements on ocean physics. Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory of NCKU has experienced research and technology on coastal infrastructure engineering. Based on the principle of mutual benefit, collaboration between both parties has focused on research and technology communication, shared information and practical applications. Through the integration of human resource and facilities, not only can the collaboration be strengthen, but also the research capability on physics of the ocean can be increased as well as the research fields extended and research standard promoted. This research results will make a great contribution to hydrological properties of Taiwan’s coastal region and management of groundwater resource, as well as to the methodology of physics of the off-shore ocean.
About P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology
The P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology is the oldest and the largest Russian research center in the field of oceanology. The main objectives of the Institute lie in a complex study of the World Ocean and the Russian seas based on the idea of entirety of physical, chemical, biological and geological processes observed in them, laying scientific foundations for forecasting the Earth’s climate variability, rational use of marine resources and safeguarding ecological security in the interests of stable development of mankind.
The Institute was established by a resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1946 on the basis of the Laboratory of Oceanology set up in 1941. P. P. Shirshov became the Institute’s first Director. Together with P. P. Shirshov, the well-known scientists like L. A. Zenkevich, V. G. Bogorov, S. V. Bruyevich, A. D. Dobrovolsky, P. L. Bezrukov, I. D. Papanin, V. B. Shtockman and others took an active part in the formation of the new scientific center.
Today, the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology is an ensemble of 1,300 employees numbering 110 doctors of sciences and 276 candidates of sciences of various disciplines. Among the members of the Institute’s staff there are 3 Academicians and 3 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The P.P. Shirshov Institute affiliates the Atlantic Department in Kaliningrad, the Southern Department in Gelendjik, a branch in St. Petersburg, the North-Western Department in Arkhangelsk and the Caspian branch in Astrakhan.
