NCKU Prof. Yau-Hwang Kuo Developed Smart Interactive TV Platform, Delays Mental Aging and Provides Home Safety for the Elders

Committed to the medical care and living service of the elders, Prof. Yau-Hwang Kuo of the Department of Information Engineering in NCKU, after establishing the first national Digital Life Science and Technology R & D Center in 2000, has created a numerous innovative techniques and successfully developed health care box, significantly enhancing the living of the elders as well as the medical care service standards. Soon, by simply holding the TV remote controls, the elders could play games independently or with their families and friends at home, watch movies together, and chat. A full set of medical care and consultation service would effectively delay the mental aging and provide home safety for the elders.
The research team led by Prof. Yau-Hwang Kuo, including several top professors, doctors and experts from the fields of Medicine, Gerontology, Psychology, etc in the College of Medicine and the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, has engaged in cross-disciplinary research, currently cooperating with Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Tainan Veterans Home, etc, and eagerly establishing a field of space for the e-life service testing and services of the elders.
Up to now, the researches and their specific results under process include the technological development of the Smart Interactive TV Platform, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), the multimedia TV blog which integrated the same generation social network technology, the Emotional Recognition System, etc.
First of all, the development of the Smart Interactive TV Platform focuses on television as an interactive platform, targeting the mental needs and providing the service for the elders. Through control mode and interface and the Internet, the elders could easily enjoy various services and the social network which could expand to circles of friends. In addition to providing a more convenient living space, they would even slow down the mental aging of the elders.
Secondly, the services offered by the interactive television platform include television broadcast, video and audio (KTV, music, videos), games, chat, user recommendations, my favorites, system recommendations, emergency notification, ticketing, shopping, calling a cab, the knowledge (Q & A) and activities search, etc.
Thirdly, through handheld devices (PDA/cell phones), the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) provides home services such as recording television programs with handheld devices and personal computers by controlling home computer server, in addition to watching TV shows on the Internet, allowing one to watch the recorded shows after work. Also, through computers and network, the IPTV technological platform could simultaneously play different TV programs for many viewers. Through the communication between IPTV platform and home Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) equipments, for example, lamps, refrigerators, air conditioners, monitors and other home appliances, the handheld devices could control home appliances, thus one could turn on the air conditioner before getting off work with cell phone or PDA or use these handheld devices to control the usage of home appliances.
Fourthly, the multimedia TV blog which integrated the same generation social network technology is created by combining P2P (peer to peer), VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) with data mining, social network, database system, and other techniques. The major application scenarios include making friends on the Internet, sharing photos, online chat, etc. In consideration of the elders, the user interface especially designed for the elders employed TV remote control they were familiar of to proceed with the operation and usage. Noteworthy to mention, this particular system could record all the television programs the users have watched, find their most favorite programs and recommend them to other users. Moreover, the users could access the Internet to chat, watch TV and movies with their friends. Similar to the functions of a blog, the users could view photos, exchange thoughts and chat on the voice lines all at the same time, thus bringing the friends closer and expanding the circle of friends.
Lastly, the technique of the newly developed Emotional Recognition System uses the physiological signals, facial expressions, sound signals as input information and also the artificial intelligence techniques (eg. neural network, genetic algorithms), signal processing, image processing to process and analyze the collected raw data, and then it builds models to identify the emotions. The technique of the facial recognition uses Webcam to capture people's facial expressions, combining neural network facial recognition technique for more than 100 facial features to produce the four major emotions of happiness, anger, sadness and joy. Currently, this technique on facial recognition has an extremely high recognition degree. It is possible that elders at home would encounter some emotion problems, but this recognition technique could send their emotional changes to distant relatives through Internet.
Prof. Yau-Hwang Kuo is the precursor of the national digital life scientific and technological research and development. He cooperated with Walsin and the Institute for Information Industry to establish the first national Digital Life Science and Technology R & D Center in National Cheng Kung University, receiving over NT$80 million in academia-industry collaboration research fund, publishing many papers and patents.
Prof. Kuo has received countless awards, including the National Science Council Research Award, the Academic Year 2001 NCKU College of Engineering Outstanding Research Teacher Award, the 2000 Acer Thesis Award, etc. His graduate students have also received Research Project Creativity Award, Microcomputer Application System Design Contest Award, Tatung InfoComm WiMAX Creative Application Competition Paper Award, etc.
