NCKU Occupied 9 Seats in National Science Council Outstanding Research Award

The National Science Council, Executive Yuan, Taiwan, announced the winners of 2009 Outstanding Research Award. Among the 90 winners, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) occupied 9 seats, only second to that of National Taiwan University (NTU).

The NCKU winners of the Outstanding Research Award are the Senior Executive Vice-President - Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung of Department of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering, Prof. Hua-Lin Wu of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Prof. Kuei-Sen Hsu of Department of Pharmacology, Prof. Jow-Lay Huang of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Prof. Ruey-Jen Yang of Department of Engineering Science, Prof. Fei-Bin Hsiao of Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Prof. H. Paul Wang of Department of Environmental Engineering, Prof. Fan-Tien Cheng of Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems and Prof. Tong-Yee Lee of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering.

The National Science Council, Executive Yuan, rewards scientific and technical talents of outstanding research achievements and encourages them to engage in long-term academic or academia-industry research, in order to elevate the academic research standard and the international academic reputation of Taiwan as well as to elevate the industrial technical research achievements and industrial technical development strength.

The National Science Council selects outstanding research talents annually. The numbers of winners allowed are 88 in the academic research category and 5 in the academia-industry research category. Each winner receives incentive payments for 3 consecutive years, NT$300,000 annually, in addition to the certificate.

The outstanding academic research achievements of Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung of Department of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering are the characteristics of nonlinear wave slopes, the characteristics of two phase flow of boundary layer in surf and swash zone, the characteristics of layer fluids of wave motion, the research of tsunami spread and beach line erosion and the analytic technology and application of digital image water level monitor.

The research achievements of Prof. Hua-Lin Wu of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are the examination of the vascular biology and cell function of thrombomodulin membrane proteins family and the development of anti-inflammatory and anti-vascular sclerosis drugs.

The research achievements of Prof. Kuei-Sen Hsu of Department of Pharmacology include the application of long-term protentiation and depotentiation on exploring the long-term synaptic plasticity changes and the correlation between learning, memory and other cognitive functions, the practice of animal behavioral stress on discovering the stress exposure, neuronal activity, long-term synaptic plasticity changes and their connection in emotional disorders, and the understanding of the association between long-term synaptic plasticity and drug addiction caused by central nervous system stimulants (such as cocaine).

The research achievements of Prof. Jow-Lay Huang of Department of Materials Science and Engineering include the exploration of functional and electronic ceramics, ceramic and metal composite materials, inorganic bulk, physical sputtering, chemical evaporation, wet chemistry, precision ceramics and coating technology as well as microelectronic device oxide, nitride semiconductor thin films and nonstructural growth patterns and mechanisms.

The research achievements of Prof. Ruey-Jen Yang of Department of Engineering Science focus on the microfluidic chip field of electrical, chemical, optical and material science integration, chemical laboratory instruments and equipment miniaturization and micro-nano fluid chip application.

The research achievements of Prof. Fei-Bin Hsiao of Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics are the development wind tunnel experiments, flight tests, aerodynamics, flight control and satellite technology theories, se on the aerospace technology theories and the application of the theories on unmanned aircraft systems, micro-satellite systems and micro-nano technology.

The major research achievements of Prof. H. Paul Wang of Department of Environmental Engineering include the application of smart resource recycle and core-shell materials synthesis technologies on new low-cost dye-sensitized solar cell electrode and electrolyte.

The research subjects of Prof. Fan-Tien Cheng of Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems mainly focus on semiconductors, panels, and solar cell industries to improve the production process and production automation.

Lastly, the outstanding research achievements of Prof. Tong-Yee Lee of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering are the application of Motion Illusion on computer graphics and the development of a series of unprecedented researches on 2D images, 3D models and 4D animations technologies.
