Prof. K. Y. Li Scholarship Wrote a Historical Page in National Education

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) announced 103 outstanding students who are recipients of the 21st Prof. K. Y. Li Scholarship on April 20th. The awarded students will each receive NT$10,000. Prof. K. Y. Li and his wife also prepared delicate lunch boxes for students, teachers and guests.
The 21st Prof. K. Y. Li Scholarship awarding ceremony was hosted by Prof. K. Y. Li with 103 awarded students, dozens of recommending professors and guests, including former NCKU President Jerry Che-Ju Ma, former NCKU President Chiang Kao, Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Huang, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Jer-Ming Tang, Vice-President for Student Affairs Pi-Ching Hsu, Secretary General Woei-Shyan Li, Library Director Wen-Jen Hsieh, Museum Director Hong-Sen Yan, Alumni Association Center Director Shyh-Yu Shaw, E-Ton Solar Chairman Stephen Wu, Kun Shan University Chairman Shi-Chung Li, etc.
Even though he could not attend the event, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai wrote a letter to express his sincere gratitude towards Prof. K. Y. Li and his anticipations for the awarded students in cultivating the spirit of Prof. Li and becoming a model social citizen. Former NCKU President Chiang Kao also praised the personality of Prof. K. Y. Li as the most tangible manifestation of NCKU spirit.
The K. Y. Li Scholarship collects the money that disciples give to their mentors and presents it as scholarship to students. It has a greater significance when students are benefited by the good intentions of the disciples. Prof. Li and his wife always prepare nutritious lunch boxes in this occasion for every awarded student and recommending teacher.
“The Prof. K. Y. Li Scholarship has multiple significances. First, the awarded students have excellent performance in both studies and behaviors. Second, Prof. K. Y. Li has devoted to the cultivation of NCKU talents for many decades. He continues to cultivate the younger generation and award the outstanding students even after retirement. Prof. Li represents the noblest spirit of educators. Third, the scholarship is the money Prof. Li’s disciples donate to Prof. Li and his wife in memory of his teachings. But Prof. Li returns the money to current young students in recognition of their outstanding performance and easing their financial burdens. It is an act of inheritance, expecting all the awarded students to learn the spirit of Prof. Li,” said President Lai.
“Success is not about making a lot of money or having a high profession. It’s about doing what you want to do and enjoying what you do. Prof. Li and his wife are the most caring couple I know. I’ve learned the most when I studied in NCKU, and I’m still earning from my mentor and his wife,” said E-Ton Solar Chairman Stephen Wu.
The 21st Prof. K. Y. Li Scholarship totaled NT$1,030,000, including NT$600,000 donated by E-Ton Solar Chairman Stephen Wu, NT$60,000 donated by HIWIN Technologies Chairman Yung-Tsai Chuo and NT$70,000 donated by Prof. K. Y. Li personally. The amount of scholarship and the number of awarded students are the highest this year.

Professor K. Y. Li, a former Dean of NCKU College of Engineering, is currently an Emeritus Professor in NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering. After conferred with his PhD overseas, Professor Li declined a government's job offer with high stipend. Rather, he chose to teach at NCKU with a lower income. Not only teaching and conducting researches, but also he devoted himself into promoting the juniors. He has always been viewing his students as his sons and daughters. Successful and famous students he has taught ever are dotting around the globe, such as Mr. Hsin-I Lin (former Vice Premier of Taiwan), Dr. Cheng-I Weng (President of Fo Guang University), Dr. Lawrence T. Wong (Chairmen of the Hong Kong Jockey Club), and Mr. Stephen Wu (Chairman of E-Ton Solar Tech. Co.).
