NCKU Chair Professor Tzyh-Jong Tarn Received AACC John R. Ragazzini Award

Chair Professor Tzyh-Jong Tarn of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, is the first Chinese American to receive the John R. Ragazzini Award of The American Automatic Control Council (AACC), which will be presented at the 2010 American Control Conference during the Awards Ceremony on Thursday, July 1st, 2010 in Marriott Waterfront, Baltimore, Maryland.
The award is conferred in the recognition of his contributions to control education through teaching, mentoring of graduate students, research in control theory and applications to robotics.
NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng hoped to rely on Prof. Tarn’s professional knowledge of system science and control theory and integrate them with the quantum scientific research at NCKU to create new nanotechnology research achievements. He also expected Prof. Tarn to pass on his knowledge of system science and control theory to the students at NCKU and create more opportunities for scientific research achievements.
The American Automatic Control Council (AACC) is an organization founded in 1956. It promotes cooperation among various segments of the automatic control profession in United States and represents U.S. to participate in international activities of automatic control. The association is a member of the International Federation of Automatic Control.
The American Automatic Control Council (AACC) is an association of the control systems divisions of eight member societies. These eight societies are American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Institute of Chemical Engineer, Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineer, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society and Society for Computer Simulation.
In recognition of their outstanding achievements in science and technology or control theory, The American Automatic Control Council issues five awards to five individuals annually. The five awards are The Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award, The Control Engineering Practice Award, The Donald P. Eckman Award, The John R. Ragazzini Award and The O. Hugo Schuck Award. The Ragazzini Award is given to recognize outstanding contributions to automatic control education in any form, such as electronic, publications and courses.

Prof. Tzyh-Jong Tarn is an internationally renowned theorist on world systems science and control theory. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, in 1959, and obtained his master degree at Stevens Institute of Technology and doctoral degree at Washington University in St. Louis, U.S.
Prof. Tarn was featured in the Special Report on Engineering of the 1998 Best Graduate School issue of US News and World Report. His recent research accomplishments were featured in The Washington Times, Financial Times, Le Monde, and The Chicago Sun-Times.
Prof. Tarn is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering and the Director of the Center for Robotics and Automation at Washington University. He is also the Visiting Director of the Center for Quantum Information Science and Technology at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
