The 2010 NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest press conference was held on May 5th, in front of Art Center, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.

The Mektec Corporation had donated ten millions New Taiwan Dollars to National Cheng Kung University and established the NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest in 2004. The NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest is divided into two groups, the group of science and engineering and the group of humanities and social sciences. Last year, the company had added a special award called Campus Environment Creative Award.

In response to global environmental protection and energy and carbon reduction, the 6th NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest added the special award, Energy Creative Award, hoping for sustainable development of the environment and sustainable use of earth’s resources.

The 2010 NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest press conference had invited NCKU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, Deputy Manager Rung-Jou Huang of Mektec Corporation, NCKU Department of History Prof. Pan Ku, Department of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Sen-Yung Lee, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Prof. Muh-Rong Wang, Art Center Director Chong-Ray Hsiao,, Director of Division of Academic Services Prof. Jian-Shiuh Chen and previous winning students to attend.

NCKU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang said, “The NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest is the Renaissance of National Cheng Kung University. With science and technology as its base, NCKU has formed a cultural image integrating humanities and creativity. Under the leadership of President and Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, administrative units such as Art Center have together promoted the Renaissance of NCKU and created outstanding achievements.”

Prof. Ming-Jer Tang further explained, “The Creative Contest founded by Mektec Corporation has offered NT$1,000,000 per year. With this fund, the creativities of NCKU students have gradually begun to shine. Many NCKU teachers and colleagues from Mektec have told me that the Creative Contest at National Cheng Kung University seemed to have blossomed and born fruit. I’m extremely pleased to see that students’ creative products are making great progress every year.”

Prof. Ming-Jer Tang expressed, “The NCKU Mektek Cup Creative Contest offers NT$1,000,000 every year and the winner of the gold medal will receive NT$100,000. The prize is a great encouragement for the students. It is also of great influence on the campus. Recently, there are more and more news about NCKU students receiving awards in international competitions. Students from different colleges have put in great efforts in exploring innovative ideas that gained many awards and wide recognition. Students who have received the awards even come back to the university voluntarily to share their achievements. This noble act nurtured by the contest symbolizes the success of NCKU education.”

Prof. Ming-Jer Tang emphasized, “National Cheng Kung University is a comprehensive university which focuses on technology and humanities. NCKU students are successful in both fields of technology and humanities. We will continue to innovate and make NCKU one of the key cradles of creativity in Taiwan.”

Deputy Manager Rung-Jou Huang of Mektec Corporation mentioned, “As one of the operators of the company, I understand that the development of products requires creativity to maintain international competitiveness. Therefore, I hope to elevate and motivate the creative abilities of students while they’re still at school. Creativity is everywhere. For example, the dolls of gods in the convenient stores or temples are manufactured by a company in Tainan. Creativity exists in any industry. I hope students will participate in the contest actively. This may be a turning point in your life.”
