NCKU Announced One Million US Dollar Donation of Exploration and Production Software from Schlumberger
Tainan, Taiwan, June 18th, 2010
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, announced a one-million US dollar donation of exploration and production (E&P) software from Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield service company, on June 18th.
During the signing ceremony, the donation agreement was signed by representatives from both NCKU and Schlumberger, Dean Wen-Teng Wu of the College of Engineering at National Cheng-Kung University and Vice-President Ahmad Hatta Kamaruzzaman for Middle East & Asia at Schlumberger Information Solutions.
The attending guests included Prof. Yun-Hwei Shen, Chair of the Department of Resources Engineering at NCKU, Vice-Director Ta-Lin Chen of CPC Exploration & Development Research Institute (EDRI) and executives from several research institutes and oil and gas companies in Taiwan.
The leading-edge oil and gas exploration and production software developed by Schlumberger will be installed in the Department of Resources Engineering and be used for teaching and academic research.
“The software will enable us to instruct our students with cutting-edge software technology, which will reflect positively on the areas of their studies and future career opportunities in the energy industry,” said Dean Wen-Teng Wu of Engineering at National Cheng Kung University.
Dr. Wen-Teng Wu added, “The access to the latest geoscientific and petroleum engineering software will not only help students to better understand the theory and concepts in the classroom, but it will also prepare them to enter the oil and gas industry as highly productive technologists and engineers.”
The donated software package included Petrel* geological modeling and reservoir engineering and ECLIPSE* reservoir simulation. The software is currently used in hundreds of oil and gas companies around the world. It represents the latest Schlumberger software technology for asset teams to conduct full field studies for the whole workflow, from seismic to simulation.

The Schlumberger Worldwide University Software Program offers software developed and marketed by Schlumberger to selected colleges, technical institutes and universities.
Schlumberger donated the software to National Cheng Kung University as part of its efforts to increase the industry-standard applications software knowledge of geology and oil gas simulation engineering for students. The donation will also broaden the professional skills of NCKU graduates with petroleum engineering background, making them more competitive in the job market.
