The 2010 World Assistive GameMaster Tournament Exhibition Held at NCKU
Tainan, Taiwan, July 21st, 2010
The 2010 World Assistive GameMaster Tournament Exhibition was held on July 21st in Department of Electrical Engineering, Tzu-Chiang Campus, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, and initiated by NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng, Distinguished Prof. Ching-Hsing Luo of NCKU Department of Electrical Engineering and Dr. Kurt Johnson, Head of the Division of Rehabilitation Counseling at University of Washington, U.S.A.
NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng said in the opening ceremony, “I am very happy to see that besides NCKU, nearly all other regional sister-universities, including National University of Tainan, National Taitung University, Kun-Shan University and Southern Taiwan University, are deeply involved.”
He also emphasized, “In the 21st century, the world is too interconnected, thus universities should not and must not be isolated islands. While on certain level, we do compete, but on some other level, we surely can also collaborate on meaningful projects such as what is demonstrated in this tournament. Furthermore, I am confident that we can promote the intellectual vitality of our region in a win-win manner together to render our region to become one of the most exciting areas in Taiwan.”
Distinguished Prof. Ching-Hsing Luo of Department of Electrical Engineering expressed, “The 2010 World Assistive GameMaster Tournament Exhibition is held to warm up the coming 2011 World Assistive GameMaster Tournament. We hope that it will enable this international event designated for people with severe disabilities to originate from Taiwan and promote the international image of Taiwan for the unfortunate.”
Prof. Luo added, The Assistive GameMaster Tournament may also motivate people with disabilities to use the assistive technologies flexibly and ignite hope for them. Our team will expand the novel assistive computer user interfaces for the people with severe disabilities to participate in the game tournament, so as to enhance their joy of life.”
Players suffering from quadriplegia, including 29-year-old Mr. David Yan, 50-year-old Ms. Szu-Chi Huang and Mr. Cheng-Da Tsai, have participated in the game tournament, which attracted approximately 20 people with disabilities and 30 common people, and they have demonstrated the Morse Code-based Mouth-controlled Text input device (McTin) especially designed for them.
Mr. David Yan, who experienced a diving accident at senior high school in 1998, is currently operating the Morse Code-based Mouth-controlled Text input device to manipulate all the functions of a computer and holding the post of project manager of assistive technology devices testing in the Sunshine Assistive Technology Devices Research Group.
Through the Morse Code-based Mouth-controlled Text input device and Internet, Ms. Szu-Chi Huang, who has been suffering from quadriplegia for 16 years, has great enthusiasm for the computer, as she devotes herself into group buying, helps her family to pay the bills, and even books hotels or high speed rail tickets to travel round the island.
Mr. Cheng-Da Tsai, who has been suffering from quadriplegia for more than 10 years, had spent most of his time lying in bed, staring at the television and watching the clock running in circles. However, he has learned to operate the Morse Code-based Mouth-controlled Text input device (McTin) and computer, thus allowing him to have access to a broader world.
The 2010 World Assistive GameMaster Tournament Exhibition was supervised by National Science Council, Taiwan, and organized by National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, University of Washington, U.S.A., National University of Tainan, Taiwan, National Taitung University, Taiwan, Kun-Shan University, Taiwan, and Southern Taiwan University, Taiwan.
The events of the Tournament Exhibition included Assistive Multi-Agent System Demonstration, Game Tournament for Persons with Disabilities, Game Tournament for Common People, Game Tournament for Common People vs. Persons with Disabilities, Assistive Technology Devices on Trial, Awards and Banquet.
