The Inauguration of NCKU President Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung in Taiwan

Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung of Department of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, the former Senior Executive Vice-President, was sworn in as the University’s new President on February 1, 2011.
One of the oldest universities in Taiwan, National Cheng Kung University is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. NCKU has grown from an engineering college into a top comprehensive university of 9 colleges, with more than 20,000 degree candidates and 140,967 alumni over the world.
In his inaugural speech, President Hwung referred to missions accomplished by his predecessors that have developed NCKU into its present leading position. Hwung mentioned these accomplishments to emphasize the legacy of commitment that has been passed down to him and the new responsibility that he is undertaking.
President Hwung emphasized the four missions of teaching, research, service, and counseling of the university education in the 21st century. The teaching of students is the primary mission to cultivate students’ professional knowledge.
Concerning research, since the engineering field of NCKU has ranked the first in Taiwan and 19th globally for its outstanding academic performance, Hwung emphasized, “NCKU must use its strength in engineering to promote interdisciplinary collaborative research among medicine, science and life science fields to upgrade the University’s international profile with more groundbreaking and innovative research achievements.”
In addition, industry-academia cooperation, emphasized President Hwung, gets NCKU to reach out to the industry with its research and teaching outcomes while the industry feeds back to university research and teaching. By assisting in upgrading domestic industry, NCKU reaches out to serve the community.
Students’ counseling is also NCKU’s focus in terms of student affairs, especially in offering assistance and care to the disadvantaged students so that they can successfully complete their studies.
With his leadership, President Hwung-Hweng Hwung expects to create a high-quality pleasant campus environment where faculty engage themselves in teaching and research, staff offers their services, and students do their studies.

Best known for his research in wave modulation, wave dynamics and sediment transport, President. Hwung-Hweng Hwung’s outstanding research achievements include the behavior of nonlinear wave slopes, two phase boundary layer flow in surf and swash zone, wave motion of layered fluids, tsunami spread, shore line erosion and the digital image technology for applications of water level monitor. Besides, President Hwung is one of the key figures in promoting industry-academia cooperation.
Born in 1946, Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung received his bachelor degree of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering at NCKU in 1970, master degree of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering at NCKU in 1975, and doctoral degree of Civil Engineering at NCKU in 1981, which makes him the only President in the history of NCKU who has dedicated his life to National Cheng Kung University after the university education.
President Hwung-Hweng Hwung is professor of the NCKU Department of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering, Director of Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory, and President of the Water Industry Development and Promotion Association.
He is also the member of International Association of Hydraulic Research, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, the Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, R.O.C., the Association of Ocean Engineering, R. O. C., International Conference on Hydrodynamics (ICHD), and the Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology.
Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung has received numerous awards and honors, including PACON Service Award in 2003, Excellence Award for University-Industry Collaboration, National Cheng Kung University in 2004, Paper Award of Taiwan's Society of Ocean Engineering in 2004, Award of Hydraulic Engineering Contribution in Taiwan in 2005, Honorary Scholar Award of Li Guo Ding in 2005, The 2006 Award for Outstanding Contributions in Science and Technology in 2006, Fellowship of the Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2007, NCKU Distinguished Industry-University Professor Award in 2007, Outstanding Alumni Award, National Tainan First Senior High School in 2008, Union-Tech Ocean-Engineering Technology Chair Professor in 2008, and Distinguished Research Award National Science Council, Taiwan, in 2010.
