NCKU Student Grabbed 2nd Place at iF Concept Award

Doctoral student I-Jui Lee from Department of Industrial Design at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, recently won the 2nd place and a scholarship of EUR$5,000 at 2011 iF Concept Award for his creation of “Pen Ruler” which can easily calculate the distance number of a surface.
According to the spokesperson of iF Design, Anna Reissert, more than 8,000 works from 52 countries participated in the competition this year.
In recognition of his outstanding performance, NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung spared time to meet I-Jui Lee in the Office of the President on Thursday morning.
President Hwung praised Lee’s creative idea and practical design ability and also encouraged him to share his experience with the younger generation and inspire them to create.
Lee’s original concept is when dressmakers make clothes, they need to measure the customers’ body size repeatedly to get the correct measurements because it is difficult to measure the bending or irregular lines.
The inconvenient process inspired I-Jui Lee to create a tool which is intuitive and can easily record the surface distance.
Lee’s “Pen Ruler” looks like a regular pen and it consists of a narrow brush sensor, wide brush sensor, rolling ball sensor, and designer can also change difference units, scale by difference kinds of situation.
This tool can calculate the distance by using the small rolling ball, camera detection sensor or infrared detection in front of the pen and it can also adjust different units and scale size to show the distance number on display for the user.
What is unique about this tool is that the data can be digitalized and recorded easily and conveniently. When users want to record the next line size, they just swing the pen to clear the recorded surface distance number.
In terms of applications, the “Pen Ruler” can measure the physical size of various products. In dress design, it can measure the body size of models, provide precise unit conversion job. In architecture design it can act as a sketch tool for the elevation of building structure.
The “Pen Ruler” is undeniably the most convenient operation tool for the engineering and design related industries.
The iF concept award is one of the most important as well as biggest international competitions for students and young professionals from the areas of design, architecture, marketing and engineering. The iF concept award was introduced as a diciplin in 2003 and has become an award in 2008. It is a label of design excellence for young designers worldwide but also secures points in the iF ranking university for the academic institutions involved.
All 8,007 ideas and visions that were entered in this year's award from 52 countries from around the globe will be on display in CeBIT Hall.
