NCKU Received Recognition for Green Building Design
Tainan, Taiwan, April 15th, 2011
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was recognized by the Ministry of Interior, Taiwan, for its Y. S. Sun Green Building Research Center, aka Magic School of Green Technology on April 15th.
According to Yi-Huah Jiang, Minister of the Ministry of Interior, over 2,800 buildings have acquired the green building certificate in Taiwan since 1999. The Taiwan Ecology, Energy, Waste Reduction and Health (EEWH) Diamond Certification is the highest award given by the Ministry of Interior, Taiwan, for green buildings.
Upon receiving the award, Hwung-Hweng Hwung, President of National Cheng Kung University, said that to contribute to a healthier planet, the world’s priority is to reduce resource and energy consumption.
Driven by the desire to save the planet, Hwung wanted the Y. S. Sun Green Building Research Center to serve as an example for others to follow.
The three-storey 4,800 square meter green building serves as the university’s international conference center and is used to showcase technological innovations of green buildings. Its system of solar chimneys can move hot air out of the conference hall and replace it with cool air without turning on air conditioning.
It is estimated that the building uses 35% of the energy of a typical office building.
Other key features include toilets which can reduce water runoff and roof garden soil which uses light-weight ceramics.
