NCKU Tops Industry-Academia Collaborations: CIE

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has the most outstanding industry-academia collaborations among national universities in Taiwan, according to the Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE).
On behalf of NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, NCKU Research and Services Headquarters Director Mi-Ching Tsai received the certificate from President Ying-Jeou Ma at the Centennial Conference of the Chinese Institute of Engineers.
“Universities must transform research into capacity to achieve substantial achievements,” said President Hwung-Hweng Hwung. “NCKU has proved itself to be the forerunner of industry-academia collaborations in Taiwan, as it achieved a breakthrough in the school budget and a higher level of technology transfer.”
Taking the year 2009 as an example, the University’s academia-industry collaboration budget amounted to NTD$3.51 billion, representing 44% of the total school budget. The industry-academia collaboration budget from the industrial sectors was NTD$380 million, accounting for 10.8% of the total budget, higher than an average of 7.03% registered for all universities in the United States.
The amount of the revenues generated from intellectual property rights enforcement increased from NTD$14 million in 2006 to over NTD$100 million in 2009, making NCKU the first university in Taiwan to exceed over NTD$100 million. The amount of the revenues generated from intellectual property rights also exceeded over NTD$100 million in 2010.
“The effectiveness of industry-academia collaborations is the joint efforts of teachers and students,” said Director Ming-Ching Tsai. “Since its establishment in 1996, NCKU Research and Services Headquarters (RSH) has expanded from 5 research centers to 71 research centers, thus showing significant improvement.”
To provide better services and make further contributions, Ming-Ching Tsai sets goals to achieve.
He expected to transform each of the research centers into a platform which will generate pre-employment training opportunities for students and allow research personnel to assist professors in their lectures and entrepreneurs to take part in advanced studies at the Center.
