NCKU startup showcase highlights nine innovative plans

Over 200 attendees, including scholars, entrepreneurs, investors, and professional service providers came together to celebrate students’ innovative and entrepreneurial talents at a recent press conference and exhibition held at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan.
“The exhibition showcases nine startup plans including winners of Outstanding Startup Awards and Potential Startup Awards at a grand competition initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST),” said NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung at the opening on October 15.
MOST Minister San-Cheng Chang attended the opening and congratulated NCKU on its success, saying that a total of four teams from NCKU won big at the competition of Innovation & Startups program initiated by MOST in July.
The most efficient way to provide academic research results to the industry is through technology transfer, according to Minister Chang, and NCKU has provided successful examples.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in 2013, NCKU achieved 100 points in the “Industry Income” score and is ranked top alongside Duke University and John Hopkins University in this respect, President Hwung noted.
He also pointed out, sometimes when academic results may not meet industries’ needs, and industries may not find the research findings applicable.
NCKU holds forums regularly to facilitate the cooperation between industry and academic sectors.
In the exhibition, a total of nine startup plans are displayed, including Cherub, one of the winners of MOST Outstanding Startup Awards, which is designed to apply high frequency electromagnetic thermotherapy to treat big tumors in animal.
