NCKU celebrates its 84th birthday

In honor of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)’s 84th anniversary, faculty and students of the university put on a great parade on November 11 at the Kuang-Fu Sports Field drawing a large crowd and making the most featured anniversary ever with international touch.
Students from local and international community gathered in the early morning at this grand event and celebrated the university’s 84th birthday.
“This is my first time doing parade in Taiwan,” said Baboo Balan, a mechanical engineering student, in his Indian traditional costume adding, “My Indian friends are here all wearing Indian costume. We are very excited about the parade.”
NCKU president Huey-Jen Jenny Su attended the opening ceremony, simply saying to everyone in the university community, “Happy Birthday to NCKU!”
The anniversary celebrations kicked off at 8:30 in the morning with a marching band from National Tainan Girls’ Senior High School, followed by the parade and track and field events.
Over 100 international students from 70 countries participate in the parade, according to Prof. Mei-ling Tsai, Director of International Student Affairs Division.
“A total of 70 national flags of the countries where our international students come from will be showcased in the parade,” said Tsai. Students are wearing their national costumes and happy to join the celebration showing their gratitude to the university, she added.
NCKU is committed to educating future leaders with humanistic and professional grounding, creativity, global vision and social consciousness, according to the university, and promoting interdisciplinary research which can benefit our society and mankind.
NCKU is a comprehensive university with 9 colleges: Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Planning & Design, Management, Social Science, Medicine and Bioscience & Biotechnology.
All the colleges are within walking distance on the main campus, allowing students to take interdisciplinary courses easily.
